Absolum Game

Absolum is the kind of beat 'em up that looks approachable and then immediately punishes you for button mashing. Developed by Guard Crush Games alongside French animation studio Supamonks and published by Dotemu, this medieval fantasy roguelite launched on October 9, 2025, and it packs a surprising amount of mechanical depth beneath its gorgeous Mike Mignola-inspired art. Whether you're picking up Galandra, Karl, Cider, or Brome for the first time, understanding how the combat and progression systems actually work will save you a lot of failed runs.

What are the core combat mechanics in Absolum?

Every character shares the same foundational toolkit: a basic Strike attack, a heavy Skill attack, and Arcana abilities powered by mana. Mana builds up as you hit enemies, so staying aggressive is rewarded. Arcana aren't just big damage buttons either — they all deal tech hits, which means they can lift grounded enemies and reset your combos mid-juggle.

The two mechanics that separate good players from great ones are the deflect and the clash. Deflecting works by dodging forward into an incoming attack, acting as an intercept that blocks the hit. The clash is the higher-risk version: time a Skill or Arcana precisely when an enemy is attacking, and you'll stun them while dealing increased damage on your follow-up. High risk, high reward, exactly as intended.

Throws add another layer. Grabbing and throwing an enemy grants brief invincibility frames, making it one of the few guaranteed-safe moves in the game. Use it when you're surrounded and need a moment to breathe.

The Pressure and Overpressure system

Every enemy has an invisible Pressure gauge that fills as you deal damage. Once it maxes out, the enemy enters Overpressure, and your next hit deals significantly increased damage. This system was specifically designed to prevent the infinite combo loops that plagued older beat 'em ups. You can't just loop the same juggle forever — Overpressure rewards you for mixing up your offense and landing that decisive finishing blow.

Tech hits and impact hits explained

A tech hit lifts a knocked-down enemy back into the air, letting you continue a combo. Every character has at least one attack with this property, and all Arcana deal tech hits automatically. The impact hit is a bonus damage trigger that fires when a launched enemy collides with a wall or another enemy. Positioning matters — launching someone into a crowd or a corner deals noticeably more damage than launching them into open space.

Which character should you pick first?

All four characters play distinctly, so your choice depends on the playstyle you're comfortable with.

Galandra is the most straightforward starting point. Her massive two-handed sword covers wide arcs, and her cursed right arm opens up devastating dark flame combos. She was the first character built for the game, and it shows — her moveset feels the most cohesive for players learning the fundamentals.

Karl mixes punching range with his blunderbuss for mid-range coverage, making him a flexible pick if you like switching between close and medium distance. Cider rewards players who want fast, technical play with gadgets and traps. Brome keeps enemies at arm's length with staff attacks and magic, which is useful for learning enemy patterns without getting hit as often.

How does the roguelite progression work?

Absolum's progression operates on two tracks: the stuff you find during a run, and the permanent upgrades that carry across every run.

In-run pickups: Rituals, Inspirations, and Trinkets

Rituals are passive bonuses presented after clearing certain rooms. They modify your attacks in specific ways — adding a burning fire effect to Strikes, or causing Arcana to summon a lightning sphere. Inspirations are character-specific passives dropped by sub-bosses in each zone; they alter how your attacks function rather than just adding a flat bonus. Trinkets provide passive boosts like increased health or higher mana generation, and you can buy them from the merchant Kahlo or find them in the world.

All three are lost on death. That's the roguelite contract.

Permanent progression: Radiance, Crystals, Seeds, and Fruits

Every run earns Radiance Points based on kills and combo hits. These accumulate into your Radiance Level regardless of whether you win or lose, and each level awards three types of meta-progression currency:

  • Crystals: spent at the Soul Tree for permanent stat upgrades and bonuses like Mother's Grace (extra lives). Also used mid-run to reroll Ritual and Inspiration offers.
  • Primordial Seeds: taken to Ederig the Stalwart to unlock new Arcanas and Inspirations.
  • Imbued Fruits: given to Vikhana, the Joyful to unlock new Ritual bonuses, including hybrid upgrades that combine two different elements.

World map and route selection

The world map offers branching paths rather than a linear route. Different paths feature different enemy layouts and sidequests, with sidequests netting extra rewards and sometimes opening new routes entirely. Choosing your path strategically — picking routes with sub-bosses you need for Inspirations, or sidequests that offer Trinkets — is a meaningful decision every run.

Who are the key allies at your base?

Your hub fills up with NPCs who each serve a specific mechanical purpose:

  • Mother Uchawi: enables the Ritual of Rebirth, letting you return to life after falling in combat.
  • Ederig the Stalwart: unlocks new Arcanas and Inspirations using Primordial Seeds.
  • Vikhana, the Joyful: unlocks hybrid Ritual upgrades using Imbued Fruits.
  • Kahlo: the merchant who sells Trinkets for gold. His shop upgrades as you spend gold with him.
  • Namtar, the Turncoat: a defector from Azra's Crimson Order who sells Stars of Power, Mother's Grace, and Crystals.
  • Maugis the Mystic: added in the patch 1.1 Threads of Fate update (February 12, 2026), Maugis offers Mystic Ordeals — extra challenges that unlock additional Soul Tree upgrades.
  • Zafari, the Bandit Queen: provides transport to Jaroba or Yeldrim. Recruitable as a follower for 500 gold.

Co-op and the Worlds Collide system

Absolum supports two-player co-op both locally and online. The online mode uses the Worlds Collide system, which temporarily combines each player's individual story progress without overwriting either person's save. If one player goes down in combat, the other can revive them at minimal health by interacting with their body. The game also includes an Assist option designed for younger or less experienced players joining in co-op.

What platforms is Absolum available on?

Absolum is available on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam (with Steam Deck certification). As of October 2025, there are no plans for an Xbox version, according to the developers.
