Crimson Desert Review: Beautiful And ...

Owning a house in Crimson Desert is one of those moments that shifts the game from a pure action experience into something that feels genuinely personal. Your home sits in a fixed spot in the world, grows alongside your story progress, and eventually becomes a fully customizable base you can fill with furniture found through exploration and shopping. The catch is that none of this opens up immediately. Housing is gated behind specific story chapters and quests, and decoration features unlock in stages. Here is everything you need to know to get settled in fast.

How Do You Unlock Your House in Crimson Desert?

The housing system does not become available until you reach Chapter 3. This is intentional. Crimson Desert ties home ownership directly to Kliff's story arc, specifically the Greymane questline, which gradually transitions your character from a displaced wanderer into someone establishing real roots in the world.

After you defeat the Hornsplitter boss at the end of Chapter 2, the story moves to Hernand City in Chapter 3. There, Marquis Serkis gifts you an area called Howling Hill, located near the main Goldleaf Camp where Chapter 2 concluded. Getting the Greymane campsite running at Howling Hill is the first major step, and it sets everything else in motion.

How to Complete the Rustling Hill Quest

Once you are inside Chapter 3 and progressing through the Greymane storyline, the Rustling Hill quest will appear. This mission is the direct trigger for unlocking your base. Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Continue through the Greymane's pioneering quest chain in Chapter 3 until Rustling Hill appears as an active mission.
  2. Open your map and locate Howling Hill, which becomes clearly marked once the quest is active.
  3. Travel to the marked area and use the inspect button to interact with the environment. This triggers the mission sequence.
  4. Complete the Rustling Hill objective to officially establish your claim to the house.

Where Is Your House Located?

Your home has a fixed position in the world: southeast of your main camp, across a ravine. Once the Greymane campsite is active at Howling Hill, head east along the ravine path and up toward the clifftops. The building is fully constructed and waiting for you. The door is always unlocked.

Inside, you will find three modestly sized rooms with minimal furnishings: a table and a bed. The bed lets you rest and pass time whenever Kliff is fatigued, which makes the location useful even before decoration unlocks.

How to Place Furniture and Customize Your House

Once the decoration system is active, the process is straightforward. When you enter your home, a house icon appears in your quick menu. Selecting it gives you a birds-eye view of the house with the roof removed, letting you freely position and move items before confirming their placement.

Not every item in your inventory can be placed. Only items marked with a house icon (commonly called Collectibles or Decorations) are eligible. These range from small objects like bowls, cups, and lanterns to larger furniture pieces like tables, cabinets, and drawers.

Where to Buy Furniture and Decorations

Exploration will turn up some decorative items naturally, but if you want to fill your house quickly, there are three dedicated sources:

The Cauldron available at the Furniture Shop is worth noting specifically. It lets you craft wine and elixirs directly, but it comes at a significant silver cost. If crafting consumables matters to your playstyle, budgeting for it early is a smart move.

Expanding the Greymane Camp itself also eventually adds a merchant who sells home furnishings, giving you a third reliable source as your camp develops.

What Benefits Does Housing Provide?

Housing in Crimson Desert covers both practical and progression-oriented ground:

  • Rest mechanic: Sleeping in your bed passes time, useful for managing fatigue and triggering time-of-day changes.
  • Personal base: A permanent, fixed location tied to your story progress that becomes a natural return point.
  • Customization: Express your playstyle through furniture arrangement and collected decorations.
  • Crafting access: Purchasing a Cauldron turns your house into a crafting station for wines and elixirs.
  • World connection: The house evolves alongside your character's story, reinforcing your investment in the Greymane narrative.

Housing is not a detached cosmetic feature. It sits at the intersection of story progression, crafting utility, and personal expression, which makes fully unlocking it worth the effort.
