The Polar Opposites quest arrives near the end of Crimson Desert's Chapter 1, dropping Kliff into the Axiom Archive, a floating structure full of energy pipes, moving blocks, and a locked door that refuses to budge until you figure out exactly what the game wants from you. The puzzle itself is simple once you understand the mechanic, but Crimson Desert's controls make it easy to fumble the execution. This guide walks you through every step.
What is the Polar Opposites quest?
Polar Opposites is the second subquest within the Traces quest line, coming directly after completing Mystical Key. According to the quest structure confirmed by Pearl Abyss, its two main objectives are activating the Abyss Nexus (which unlocks fast travel) and opening a locked building door using the Axiom Force ability. Completing it triggers a cutscene where Kliff meets Alustin, then teleports you to the next area to begin the Abyss Without Balance mission.
How to activate the Abyss Nexus
After arriving in the Axiom Archive, you'll find yourself in a large open area. Move forward to the platform ahead and stand on it. That's all it takes. The Abyss Nexus activates automatically, registering this location as a fast-travel point. You'll repeat this process at Abyss Nexus platforms throughout the rest of the game, so it's worth noting the pattern now.
info
Every Abyss Nexus you activate gets added to your map as a fast-travel destination. Standing on them takes only a second, so never skip one when you spot it.

How to solve the Polar Opposites door puzzle
This is where most players get stuck. In front of the locked building, you'll see two stone circles embedded in the ground. Blue energy is already flowing through one side of the pipe system, but it stops before reaching the right altar. Your job is to rotate both circles so the energy forms a complete path through to the altar, powering it up and opening the door.
Step 1: Acquire Axiom Force
Approach the large building to trigger a cutscene. After it plays, Kliff gains the Axiom Force ability. This lets him grab and manipulate specific objects using a magical tether projected from his hand.
Step 2: Learn the Axiom Force controls
Before touching anything, get the controls straight:
Once activated, a targeting marker appears. Aim at the edge of a stone circle, then release to grab it. From there, use the right stick (or LT/RT on controller) to rotate the object.
Step 3: Rotate the right-hand circle
Walk to the right-hand stone circle. Activate Axiom Force, aim at the edge of the circle, and grab it. Rotate it so the energy channel carved into the stone runs from the top toward the left. You're redirecting the energy flow coming from the pipe above so it can travel horizontally toward the second circle.
Step 4: Rotate the left-hand circle
Now grab the left-hand circle the same way. This time, rotate it so its channel connects the incoming energy from the right circle and directs it downward into the pipe at the bottom. This completes the circuit.
danger
Do not touch the large interactable block near the left altar that's already glowing. Pulling it free with Axiom Force cuts power to the active altar. If you accidentally do this and the puzzle stops responding, reload your autosave rather than trying to reset manually.
Step 5: Watch the door open
Once both circles are correctly positioned, the blue energy flows through the full path, the right altar lights up, and the door swings open. Head inside to trigger the next cutscene and meet Alustin.

What if the puzzle glitches?
This is worth addressing directly because it happened during testing at Rock Paper Shotgun's coverage of the quest. In some cases, the right altar simply won't activate regardless of how the circles are positioned. If that happens:
- Do not pull the interactable block from the left altar area
- Do not jump to your death to reset (this can cause the block to disappear, creating a softlock)
- Reload your most recent autosave
What comes after Polar Opposites?
Finishing the quest teleports Kliff to a new area where the Abyss Without Balance mission begins. That quest introduces a completely different ability, so the Axiom Force skills you just practiced won't carry over directly. Polar Opposites is essentially Crimson Desert's way of making sure you understand the grab-and-rotate mechanic before the game throws it at you in more demanding contexts later.
