Crimson Desert Guide: How To Open Locked Doors

Locked doors are everywhere in Crimson Desert, and the game gives you almost no explanation for how to deal with them. Walk into the wrong door without knowing what you're doing and you'll burn through your key supply before you realize what happened. Here's exactly how the system works, where to stock up on keys, and when you can skip them entirely.

How Do Locked Doors Work in Crimson Desert?

Unlike most action RPGs where a specific key opens a specific door, Crimson Desert uses a universal key system. Nearly every locked building and room across Pywel can be opened with the same generic item simply called a Key. These are consumable items that get used up the moment you open a door, so managing your supply matters more than you might expect.

The biggest frustration players run into is that there's no visual indicator telling you whether a door is locked before you try it. Walk into a locked door and the game automatically consumes a Key from your inventory without asking for confirmation. As noted by IGN's wiki, there's no prompt giving you a choice, which means accidentally wasting keys on doors you didn't intend to open is a real problem early on.

Where to Find Keys in Crimson Desert

There are four main ways to build up your key supply, and knowing all of them means you'll rarely get stuck.

Buy Keys from Grimrak's Back Alley Shop

The most reliable source is Grimrak's Back Alley Shop, located on the outskirts of town just slightly southeast of the Church Confessional vendor. Standard Keys cost 30 Copper Coins each, while Prison Keys cost 26 Copper Coins each. The catch is that the shop restocks only three keys at a time, and each restock takes roughly two in-game days. That's a tight supply, so don't treat the shop as an unlimited resource.

Loot Keys from Enemies

Enemies around Pywel can drop keys when defeated. Bleed Bandits are a confirmed source. The drop rate isn't guaranteed, but if you're clearing camps or fighting through an area anyway, you may pick up keys as a bonus.

Steal Keys from Interiors

Small wooden boxes found in cabinets and drawers sometimes contain keys. These containers are marked by bag icons that appear on your minimap. Keep in mind you'll need your Mask equipped before attempting any theft, otherwise the game won't let you interact with stealable objects. Keys can also occasionally appear on top of tables and chests, so scan rooms carefully when you're inside buildings.

Receive Keys as Quest Rewards

Some quests hand you keys directly as part of their reward. These tend to be tied to specific story moments rather than general exploration, but it's worth noting that progressing the main quest or Faction Quests can also unlock certain doors through story-specific key items rather than consumable keys.

Do You Actually Need Keys to Progress?

Here's something the game doesn't spell out: keys are not required to finish Crimson Desert. Story-critical doors are handled through quest progression and specific key items you receive naturally, not through your consumable key supply.

What keys unlock is optional exploration. Most of Pywel's buildings can be entered, and many contain valuable loot including Crafting Books that teach you new recipes. If you're the type of player who wants to see everything, keys are essential. If you're focused on the critical path, you can conserve them.

There's also a third option that the game quietly supports: climbing through windows. Many buildings that have locked front doors can be accessed by finding an open window and climbing in. This is a legitimate mechanic, not an exploit, and it's especially useful when your key supply runs low.

Final Tips Before You Go Exploring

The locked door system in Crimson Desert rewards players who stay stocked and stay observant. Keep your key supply above three, never walk into a door carelessly in a building you're not sure about, and use windows whenever the front door isn't worth the cost. For quest-critical doors, the game handles access through story progression, so you won't get permanently blocked.
