Got a bounty on your head in Crimson Desert and no idea how to shake it? The game doesn't exactly hold your hand when it comes to its crime system, and plenty of players find themselves wanted by the local guard with zero clue where to go. The fix is straightforward once you know where to look: head to a Church, find the Confessional vendor inside, and buy your way back to a clean slate.
How do you pay fines and bounties in Crimson Desert?
The only way to voluntarily clear fines and bounties is by purchasing a Writ of Absolution from a Confessional vendor inside any Church in the region of Pywel. Walk up to the vendor, select the Buy Writ of Absolution option, and you'll see a full list of every active fine and bounty tied to your character across all regions. Select whichever debts you want to settle and pay the amount owed.
The cost matches exactly what you've racked up in fines and bounties, so there's no markup or fee on top. You can also pay off debts from other regions while standing in a different one, which saves you a lot of travel time if you've been causing trouble across multiple areas.
info
Pay off fines before your bounty climbs too high. Once guards are actively chasing you, navigating to a Church becomes considerably more annoying.

Where are the Church Confessional locations?
Churches are spread across the map, but two are worth knowing early. According to the IGN Crimson Desert guide, the first Confessional most players encounter is inside the Church of Hernand, located on the eastern edge of Hernand Town, just southeast of Hernand Castle. This is the first major settlement you visit, so you'll pass through it naturally.
The second early-game option is the Church of Calphade, found in Thalwynd, a major town in northern Hernand. Both are accessible well before the mid-game, so there's no reason to let fines pile up.
What happens if you get arrested instead?
If guards catch you before you reach a Confessional, you'll be arrested and sent to jail. Serving your sentence clears the bounty automatically, without spending a single coin. That sounds like a free pass, but there's a significant catch.
If your bounty total is higher than your current funds, your money counter turns red, meaning you've entered debt. From that point forward, every piece of Copper and Silver you earn gets automatically deducted toward that debt until it's fully cleared. You can't opt out of this, and the game doesn't warn you prominently before it happens.

Going to jail while broke doesn't wipe the slate clean. It puts you in debt, and every sale you make will go toward paying it off until the balance hits zero.

How does the crime system work in Crimson Desert?
Crimson Desert tracks criminal activity on a per-region basis. Crimes range from petty theft and pickpocketing all the way up to murder, and each carries a different penalty weight. When you commit a crime, there's a brief window to leave the area before witnesses report you. Get spotted, and a fine or bounty gets applied immediately.
The higher your bounty in a given region, the more aggressively guards will pursue you. At low levels, you might get a warning or a brief chase. At high levels, guards will actively hunt you down on sight. Your map also changes color in affected regions to signal your wanted status.
Fines and bounties are region-specific, so a clean record in Thalwynd doesn't help you in Hernand if you've been causing trouble there.
info
Fines and bounties are tracked separately per region. Clearing one area's record has no effect on another region where you're still wanted.
Tips for managing your criminal record efficiently
- Pay early, pay often. Small fines are cheap. Letting them compound into a large bounty makes guard encounters far more frequent and dangerous.
- Keep a cash buffer. Before any criminal activity, make sure your wallet can cover the likely fine. Getting arrested broke is the worst outcome.
- Use the Confessional in Hernand Town early. It's the first one you'll find and the easiest to reach during the opening hours of the game.
- Cross-region payments work. You don't need to physically travel to the region where you committed the crime. Any Confessional can clear any region's debt.
- Jail isn't always bad. If your bounty is small and your funds are solid, getting arrested can actually save you money since jail time clears the record for free.
