Crimson Desert Review: Story Buried in ...

Selling animals in Crimson Desert is one of those systems the game barely explains. You'll stumble across sheep, goats, raccoons, and wild horses constantly while exploring, but the path from "I found a cow" to "I have silver in my pocket" runs through a black market most players walk right past. Here's exactly how the whole operation works.

Where to find the Livestock Black Market

The first place to know about is a windmill sitting along the lower cliffs just south of Hernand Church, in the southern farmland below Hernand Town. Two dealers operate out of this spot. One is a standard back alley merchant. The other, a man named Edmond, won't deal with you directly but makes it clear he's in the market for livestock.

To actually complete a sale, you go through the back alley merchant, not Edmond. Before you can bring anything to sell, though, you need one specific item from that same merchant: the Thief's Mask. Without it equipped, you can't steal owned animals at all. The game treats the mask as your entry ticket into any criminal activity.

How to steal and sell livestock

Animals near farmland are flagged as owned property. When you approach one and inspect it, you'll see a "Steal" prompt instead of a standard interaction. Equip your Thief's Mask first, then grab the animal.

The moment you pick up an owned animal, a red circle appears around you and a Theft alert meter activates. Anyone nearby will move to investigate and may try to arrest you or place a bounty on your head. Two ways to handle this:

  • Get out of the red circle fast, putting distance between you and any witnesses
  • Wait until nobody is watching before grabbing the animal, then let the meter drain on its own

Once you've cleared the alert, carry the animal back to the windmill. The dealers there take it automatically and hand you compensation.

How to sell stolen horses

Horses work differently from regular livestock, and they sell at a different location entirely. You'll encounter owned horses in towns, on roads, and occasionally left riderless after their owners die in combat. You can't register these as your own mounts, but you can sell them.

The buyer for stolen horses is at Saddlewind Ranch, north of Hernand Town. To get there, take the road east of the Hills of No Return until you reach a farming area near the Arboria Craftshop, then look north. Ride the stolen horse directly into the stable area marked on your map and the fence there handles the transaction automatically.

Is selling animals worth your time?

Honestly, not as a primary income source. The silver values are low across the board, and the theft system adds friction through the alert meter and potential bounty consequences. That said, if you're already in the area stealing for other reasons, or if you've just cleared a road encounter and there are horses standing around with no riders, selling them costs you nothing but travel time.

For players looking to make money faster and more reliably, Crimson Desert has several other systems worth exploring. You can browse more guides covering the game's economy, combat, and exploration over at the GAMES.GG guides hub.
