New Enshrouded update Wake of the Water ...

If you've hit the endgame in Enshrouded and want the best possible weapons, you need to know exactly where to farm. Gold chests in the Veilwater Basin region drop Level 50 legendary gear at a significantly higher rate than anything else in the game, and with the right 4-location loop, you can clear all of them in a single session before waiting out the respawn timer. Here's everything you need to get started.

What Changed in Update 7: Wake of the Waters?

Enshrouded's Update 7 reworked chest respawn mechanics in a meaningful way. Chests no longer reset immediately after relogging, which means the old exploit of logging out and back in to instantly refarm is gone. Instead, chests now sit on a respawn timer of roughly 1 to 2 hours (though the exact duration remains unconfirmed).

The update also reworked all previous weapons, so any gear you looted before the patch will have different traits than what drops now. The new level cap sits at 45, meaning chests drop Level 45 weapons that you can then upgrade to Level 50 using the Blacksmith. That upgrade step is essential for true best-in-slot potential.

danger
Because chests now have a real respawn timer, the most efficient strategy is to run the full 4-chest loop at the start of each play session, then continue playing normally for 1 to 2 hours before attempting a second pass.

For a detailed breakdown of everything else the patch changed, this legendary chest farming route for Update 7 covers the full context of these changes.

What Do You Need Before Farming Legendary Chests?

Before heading to any of these locations, you need to meet specific requirements. Skipping any of these will either lock you out of the area or make the run far harder than it needs to be.

How to Reach Flame Altar Level 9

The entire farming loop is locked behind Flame Altar Level 9, so this is your first goal. Upgrading to this tier requires gathering specific materials from across Embervale and Veilwater Basin.

Materials Required:

  • Survivors: 14 total, recruited from locations across Embervale
  • Spark: 60 units, found at Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums
  • Gold Ore: 60 units, dropped by Drak enemies or mined underwater in Veilwater Basin
  • Green Vitriol Dust: 60 units, crafted at the Laboratory (requires Iron Dust from the Mill)
  • Passionflower: 30 units, only spawns at nighttime in Veilwater Basin woods
  • Aquamarine: 60 units, mined directly in Veilwater Basin
  • Pearl: 30 units, found inside clams or as rare Drak drops (best farmed southwest of Starfish Shoes)
  • Hydrak'Dal Head: 1 unit, obtained by completing the Vengeance Quest chain and defeating Hydrak'Dal in the Drak'Dal Temple
info
Passionflower only appears at night, so plan your Veilwater Basin gathering runs accordingly. Missing this material is one of the most common reasons players stall out on the Flame Altar upgrade.

The 4-Chest Farming Loop (Best Route)

Once your Flame Altar hits Level 9, you're ready for the main event. The optimal farming loop hits four gold chest locations in a single run. Bring 2 Flame Altars with you and make sure you have no more than 8 active at any time (the game caps you at 10 total).

Location 1: Cromville Shroud Lair

Travel due north from your base to reach Cromville. Drop a Flame Altar just outside the Cromville Shroud boundary before entering.

The fastest path to the chest skips most of the Shroud Lair combat entirely. From the Flame Altar placement point, head up the hill and look for a grappling hook anchor on the top-left tower. Rotate around the perimeter to bypass shroud enemies, then jump off the ledge and grapple up past the closed gate.

Continue forward until you reach a cluster of buildings. Find the building on the right side with a visible sign, then locate the locked door to the left of that sign. Use one lockpick to open it and drop down into the lair below.

Once inside, follow your compass heading Southwest. A short tunnel leads directly to the gold chest. Loot everything, even non-legendary items, since opening the chest is what triggers the respawn timer. Then grapple and glide back to the starting point for the next location.

Location 2: Mining Rift Roof

This is the simplest chest in the loop. From your original Flame Altar position in Cromville, get onto an elevated ledge and glide toward the Mining Rift. The Airborne and Updraft travel passives are critical here, so make sure both are unlocked before attempting this.

As you glide, you'll spot a tall vertical tower with an open roof. Your target is the highest floor, which has a locked door requiring one more lockpick. Land on the top floor, unlock the door, and open the chest. If you overshoot and land on a lower floor, a ladder on the opposite side lets you climb back up and use a double jump or short glide to reach the correct level.

warning
Without the Airborne and Updraft passives, reaching the Mining Rift roof becomes much harder. Unlock these travel skills before running this loop or you'll waste lockpicks trying to climb up the hard way.

Location 3: Veilwater Basin Tomb (Underwater)

Leave the Mining Rift and travel west. Place your second Flame Altar just outside the map marker for the Tomb, which should appear uncovered on your map.

The Tomb has a straightforward layout with only a couple of minor puzzles. Drop down the stairs, take your first right, then another right. This path leads into a chamber with water and a green glow, where you'll find a silver chest. Silver chests have a lower legendary drop rate than gold chests, but they're still worth looting.

Watch out for two rotating saw blades in the water before grabbing that chest. After looting it, head back up the stairs and move into the dark hallway facing west. This is where a Wisp of Light and any swim-speed buff become genuinely valuable.

Swim forward toward the green glow ahead. If your oxygen capacity is limited to around 30 seconds, there's an air pocket to the right of the first green glow. Players with higher oxygen capacity can push straight through. Continue swimming toward the far wall, and you'll find a large gold tomb chest at the end. Refill your air on the way back out and exit the tomb.

Location 4: Drak'Dal Temple Puzzle

The final chest sits just southeast of the Tomb in the Drak'Dal Temple. The entrance is on the southeastern side of the structure.

The core mechanic inside is a water-raising puzzle. Find square blocks and activate them to raise the water level. As the water rises, crocodiles will appear and attack, so swim in circles around the pillars to avoid them while waiting for the water to reach the next level.

After dropping through the entrance hole, take a right to encounter a small group of Drak enemies (you can fight or bypass them). This area is also a good spot to farm Pearls from the breakable crates and pots. Wrap around and open the door into the next room.

Activate the large block near the enemy cages to release the water flow. Wait 15 to 30 seconds for the water to rise high enough to reach the first ledge, then press the button to raise the water again. Look in the opposite direction for a ladder and repeat the process. The final water fill takes the longest, and this is the section where crocodiles become most aggressive. Swim under the pillars in circles to avoid them until you can reach the first step, then climb the ladder, press the last button, climb one more ladder, and loot the gold chest.

How Long Does the Respawn Timer Take?

After completing the full 4-chest loop, the chests need approximately 1 to 2 hours before they're ready to loot again. The exact timer isn't confirmed to be exact by the developers, so treat this as an estimate. The most practical approach is to run the loop at login, play normally (questing, building, or exploring), and then return for a second pass when the timer has likely expired.

Loot everything from each chest regardless of rarity. Taking all items, not just legendaries, ensures the chest registers as opened and starts the respawn clock.

info
The loot pool for these gold chests is utterly massive following Update 7's weapon rework. Specific legendary weapons that can drop include the Bonebreaker, Fleshgrinder, Hairsplitter, Banebringer, Gleaming Staff, and Shadowbane, among many others. Expect a long grind before landing the exact traits you want on a specific weapon type.

Comparing Chest Types: Is It Worth Farming Silver Chests?

Loading table...

Gold chests are the clear priority, but the silver chest in the Tomb entrance is directly on your path and costs nothing extra to loot. Always grab it.

For players still figuring out where to start their legendary hunt, the Enshrouded Steam community discussions on legendary chest locations have useful player-sourced tips and location references worth browsing.

Tips for Maximizing Each Run

  • Always carry at least 2 lockpicks per run. Running out locks you out of two of the four chests.
  • The Blacksmith can upgrade Level 45 legendary weapons to Level 50, so don't discard a good roll just because it isn't max level.
  • Passionflower farming for Flame Altar upgrades is strictly a nighttime activity in Veilwater Basin woods.
  • Pearl farming is most efficient southwest of Starfish Shoes, where clam clusters spawn in high density.
  • Keep your active Flame Altar count at 8 or below when farming so you have room to place the 2 altars needed for this loop.
  • The Drak'Dal Temple also serves as the location for the Vengeance Quest chain and the Hydrak'Dal Head drop required for the Flame Altar upgrade, so you may naturally visit it during progression.
