The biggest year yet for South Town
FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves has been on a steady roll since launch, but the game's first anniversary brought the largest single update in its history, and Season 2 has kept that momentum going. Between Wolfgang Krauser crashing back into South Town after nearly three decades away, a mysterious tengu-masked fighter joining the roster, a full UI overhaul, and a brand-new story mode, there is more going on right now than at any point since release. This guide breaks down every major addition, explains what changed and why it matters, and tells you what to expect before Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star arrives in June.

Mr. Karate joins the roster
What is the full Season 2 roster?
Season 2 adds six fighters across its run. Four are already live as of late May 2026, with Kenshiro confirmed for June. Here is the complete Season Pass 2 lineup:
With Mr. Karate now live, the total confirmed roster sits at 28 characters. That includes 17 base game fighters, five Season Pass 1 additions (Andy Bogard, Ken, Joe Higashi, Chun-Li, and Mr. Big), and the six Season Pass 2 characters.
The full base roster includes Rock Howard, Terry Bogard, B. Jenet, Marco Rodrigues, Preecha, Hotaru Futaba, Vox Reaper, Tizoc, Kevin Rian, Billy Kane, Mai Shiranui, Kim Dong Hwan, Gato, Kain R. Heinlein, Cristiano Ronaldo, Salvatore Ganacci, and Hokutomaru.
Who is Mr. Karate and how does he play?
Mr. Karate arrived on May 27 as the fifth Season Pass 2 character. His identity is hidden behind a tengu mask, though his fighting style and mannerisms draw obvious comparisons to Robert Garcia from the Art of Fighting series. SNK has kept the mystery intact in his in-game lore, describing him simply as a warrior whose moves have been honed to "ultimate" perfection and who is rumored to have reached the pinnacle of power itself.
Playstyle-wise, Mr. Karate operates with a Shoto archetype. After watching developer match footage of him against Terry Bogard, the neutral game relies on solid fundamentals with good range on normals and a pressure toolkit that rewards patient aggression. His moveset is versatile rather than gimmicky, which means he has a higher ceiling for experienced players who want to build on a familiar base.
His stage, Buona Vista Dojo "Kyokugen", is a seaside dojo where Kyokugen Karate students train. You can spot a luxury cruise ship sailing past in the background. SNK also released an animated trailer directed by Masami Obari, who previously handled the Wolfgang Krauser and Street Fighter collaboration trailers. His background music theme leans into a '90s SNK sound design aesthetic that fits the era the character comes from.
Mr. Karate's Arcade and EOST Mode adventures contain extra story context for the character. If you want to understand what he is doing in South Town, run through those before jumping straight into ranked.
Ver. 2.1.2 also brought battle adjustments for Marco Rodrigues, Preecha, Hokutomaru, and Krauser, though the patch focused primarily on bug fixes rather than balance shifts. A stream-safe music filter was added as well, which is a practical addition for anyone broadcasting.
What did the Ver. 2.0.1 anniversary update change?
The Version 2.0.1 update, which landed alongside Krauser's release on April 24, was the largest single patch the game has received. The headline additions:
Wolfgang Krauser
Wolfgang Krauser returns after being absent from a mainline Fatal Fury entry for close to three decades. He was last a playable boss in Fatal Fury 2 and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special. His classic moves are intact, including Blitz Ball, Leg Tomahawk, Kaiser Wave, and Gigantic Cyclone. The update also introduced new techniques developed during his absence, specifically an extra-brutal command throw and the Knee Halberd. His stage, Kaiser Hall, is a German-style concert hall in Central City.
Wolves' Destiny story mode
This is the series' first unified story mode and the most substantial narrative content City of the Wolves has offered. The scenario is titled "The Wolves Hunger for the Throne" and covers Krauser's return to South Town and Kain R. Heinlein's attempt to stop him. It comes fully voiced in both Japanese and English, fully illustrated, and includes branching storylines with different endings based on dialogue choices. It is accessed through the Chronicles hub in the new Mode Select interface.
Ring Out Battles
The Ring Out mechanic from Real Bout Fatal Fury is back. A new stage, Second South Central, is exclusive to this match type. The rules are simple: knock your opponent off the edge of the stage for an instant KO regardless of health. Destructible stage edges add a layer of positioning pressure that plays differently from standard matches.
A known bug in Ver. 2.0.1 causes unintended behavior when certain moves result in a simultaneous KO and ring out. SNK flagged this for a future fix, so be aware if you are playing Ring Out Battles competitively.
UI overhaul and new Mode Select
The entire interface was rebuilt from the ground up. The old main menu is gone, replaced by a three-portal Mode Select screen:
- Chronicles: Arcade, EOST Mode, and Wolves' Destiny
- Battle Coliseum: Ranked Matches, casual play, missions
- Menu Hub: Settings, Color Edit, Gallery Mode, and more
A new Fighter's Hub centralizes battle settings, online profiles, win rates, and match records. The Help section includes Preecha's Perfect Fight Dojo, which covers mechanics and fighter resources. Room Match now supports training standby, a heavily requested feature that lets you practice while waiting for an online opponent.
Smart Style upgrade
The heavy version of special moves can now be used in Smart Style. This opens up new combo routes that were not accessible before, which matters if you use Smart Style as an entry point before transitioning to manual inputs.
What bugs are still being tracked?
SNK published a known issues list alongside Ver. 2.0.1. Most have been addressed in subsequent patches, but it is worth knowing what was flagged:
- REV Guard: Characters could exit blockstun under certain conditions. A fix was prioritized.
- Hokutomaru Kuuha Dan (REV): Power gauge not filling on hit.
- Krauser Crouching LP: Unintended cancel into crouching HK on hit.
- Krauser Kaiser Wave: Unintended behavior at certain hit timings.
- Ring Out Battles: Unintended behavior on simultaneous KO and ring out.
Ver. 2.1.2 resolved several of the non-battle issues, including the Room Match consecutive battle bug and Training Mode startup display problems. The stage background disappearing during Jae Hoon and Tizoc Hidden Gear cinematics in Training Mode was also fixed.
What is coming next?
Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star is the final Season Pass 2 character, confirmed for June 2026. He is the only fighter remaining before Season 2 wraps up. SNK announced his June release date back in March, so the window is close.
The game launched in April 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. City of the Wolves is the first new mainline Fatal Fury entry in more than 25 years, following Garou: Mark of the Wolves from 1999.
