Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth World Map is ...

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth lands on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S today, June 3, 2026, giving a whole new audience access to one of the highest-rated JRPG games of the current generation. With a Metacritic score of 93, over 125 perfect scores, and 40 Game of the Year awards, this Square Enix release is not a game you want to walk into blind. This guide covers everything a new player needs: the combat system, every party member, the open world, side content, and how to snag the current 20% discount before it disappears on June 10.

What is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second chapter in Square Enix's three-part remake of the 1997 PlayStation classic, which sold over 15.5 million copies and reshaped what RPGs could be. The story picks up directly after Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, with Cloud and his crew leaving the industrial city of Midgar behind and venturing into a massive open world in pursuit of Sephiroth.

You can technically jump into Rebirth without playing the first game, but playing Intergrade first (already available on Switch 2 and Xbox) fills in a lot of character context that makes the story hit harder. If you want the full picture, that's the place to start.

Who are the party members?

Rebirth fields one of the strongest ensemble casts in the series. Each character plays differently in combat and carries a distinct story arc, so understanding who does what matters from the first hour.

Cloud Strife is the protagonist, a former Shinra SOLDIER 1st Class turned mercenary. He wields the Buster Sword and serves as a balanced frontline fighter with strong ATB-driven sword techniques. His past is deliberately mysterious early on.

Tifa Lockhart fights with her fists and feet, making her a fast, close-range brawler. She's Cloud's childhood friend and the emotional anchor of the group, and her bond with Cloud develops significantly throughout Rebirth.

Aerith Gainsborough is the last of the Cetra, an ancient lineage with a deep connection to the planet. She specializes in magic and operates best at range. Her role in the larger story is the emotional core of the entire trilogy.

Barret Wallace leads the anti-Shinra group AVALANCHE and provides long-range fire support via his gun-arm. He reads as aggressive on the surface but is a devoted father, and that tension makes him one of the more interesting characters to follow.

Red XIII is a highly intelligent, wolf-like creature from Cosmo Canyon rescued from Shinra's labs. He fights with speed and sharp claws, and his personal storyline, particularly around family and his home region, is a highlight of Rebirth specifically.

Yuffie Kisaragi is a ninja from Wutai and a master of the shuriken. She joined the cast in the Intergrade expansion and becomes a full party member here, offering flexible aerial combat and plenty of personality.

Cait Sith is a fortune-telling cat robot riding a giant Moogle, and the Gold Saucer's mascot. His combat relies on unpredictable dice-based mechanics, which makes him one of the most distinct party members to learn.

How does the combat system work?

Rebirth uses an ATB-Action Hybrid system. You control characters in real-time for movement and basic attacks, and as you fight, an ATB gauge fills. When you spend ATB, time slows down and you can select skills, spells, or items from a menu. It's the closest thing to a middle ground between turn-based strategy and action combat that the series has found.

The biggest new addition is the Synergy Ability and Synergy Skill system, which lets pairs of party members combine their actions into powerful joint attacks. These are not just flashy animations; they can shift the momentum of a tough fight in seconds. You can switch between active party members on the fly, so learning which characters pair well together for synergies is worth the time investment early.

Limit Breaks and the Summon system remain the heaviest tools in your kit. Summons in particular are worth saving for major boss encounters where a mid-fight power spike can mean the difference between a clean win and a retry.

What regions can you explore?

Unlike Remake, which was set entirely inside Midgar, Rebirth opens up a full world map. Chocobos are your primary exploration tool, and they're worth getting comfortable with early since they unlock hidden treasures and let you reach elite monsters in each region.

The Junon Region is coastal and serves as one of the earlier open areas. The Gongaga Region is dense and jungle-like, with a more mysterious atmosphere. Cosmo Canyon is a red-rock canyon environment tied directly to Red XIII's backstory. Each region has its own side quests and distinct feel, and some critics have drawn comparisons to the sense of scale in Breath of the Wild.

What side content is worth your time?

Queen's Blood is the standout. It's a deep strategic card game built into the world and has developed a genuine fanbase of its own. If you enjoy card games at all, it's easy to sink hours into Queen's Blood without touching the main story.

Beyond that, the game includes 3D Brawler challenges, piano performance minigames, and Chocobo racing. The Gold Saucer, the entertainment complex where Cait Sith originates, is essentially a theme park's worth of activities packed into a single location.

Switch 2 and Xbox version differences

Both new versions include an exclusive feature called Streamlined Progression, which gives you infinite HP, MP, Limit gauge, and ATB gauge, plus a 9,999 damage cap. This mode is designed for players who want to experience the story without combat pressure. It's a legitimate option for newcomers who find the ATB system overwhelming at first.

The Switch 2 version runs at a stable 30fps with some texture and draw distance adjustments compared to PS5. The physical edition comes as a Key Card requiring a 105GB download. The first-print physical bonus is a limited-edition Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy card featuring Zack Fair, illustrated by Tetsuya Nomura.

The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single purchase covers both console and PC. Cloud Gaming support extends play to mobile devices and tablets.

How to get the best deal right now

The digital Standard and Deluxe editions are both discounted 20% until June 10, 2026. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds the Moogle Trio and Posh Chocobo summons, a digital artbook, and a mini-soundtrack. The PS5 and Steam versions have received a permanent price drop to $49.99.

A free demo covering the opening through Chapter 2 is available on the Nintendo eShop and Microsoft Store right now. Save data from the demo carries over to the full game and unlocks the Kupo Charm and Survival Set bonus, so playing the demo first is a straightforward win even if you're already planning to buy.

Is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth worth playing for newcomers?

The short answer is yes. The 93 Metacritic score reflects a game that genuinely delivers on its ambitions: a large open world, a cast of characters with real depth, combat that rewards learning without punishing curiosity, and a story that earns its emotional moments. The Streamlined Progression mode on Switch 2 and Xbox removes the last barrier for players who bounced off the combat in Remake.
