Sprites are one of the defining mechanics in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3, giving you passive and active ability boosts that can shift the outcome of a match. Finding a Sprite is only half the job. To actually add one to your permanent collection and earn Sprite Dust in the process, you need to run a full extraction. Here's exactly how that works.
What do you need before extracting a Sprite?
Before heading to an Extraction Site, you need a Sprite in your possession. Your starting Sprite counts, so the one you pick at the beginning of a round is already valid. You can also pick up additional Sprites found on the map and carry them in your backpack.
Carrying a Sprite in your hands means you cannot use weapons. Keep it in your backpack until you reach the Extraction Site to stay combat-ready.
You can carry a second Sprite in your hands, but the weapon restriction makes that a risky call in contested areas. One Sprite in the backpack is the safe play.

How to find Extraction Sites in Fortnite
Extraction Sites are scattered across the map, but they don't go live immediately. They activate after the first circle closes, so don't rush toward one at the start of a match. Once active, their locations are marked on the map, making them easy to spot.
The problem is that everyone else can see those markers too. Extraction Sites are contested by nature, and if another player is already mid-extraction when you arrive, expect a fight. Approach with cover and scout the area before committing to the control panel.
Play defensively while waiting for the Extraction Crate. You're stationary and visible, which makes you an easy target. Build cover or find a natural chokepoint before activating the panel.

How to extract Sprites in Fortnite
Once you've secured an Extraction Site, the process runs in a specific sequence. Skipping any step or dying mid-extraction resets your progress.
- Activate the control panel at the Extraction Site to call an Extraction Crate.
- Wait for the crate to arrive from the sky. This takes a few seconds.
- Place your Sprite into the Extraction Crate once it lands.
- Wait for the crate to disappear. The process takes a few more seconds after placement.
- Extraction complete. The Sprite is now unlocked in your collection if you didn't already have it.
Dying at any point during steps 2 through 4 cancels the extraction entirely. Stay alive.
What do you get from extracting a Sprite?
Successful extractions reward you in three ways:
The Sprite Dust you earn is more useful than it might seem at first. You can spend it at Sprite Stations around the map, and it also lets you summon Sprites at the start of fresh rounds without relying on random finds. If you're working toward specific Sprites, check out the Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 Sprite tier list to know which ones are worth prioritizing.
Certain Chapter 7 Season 3 quests specifically require a completed extraction. Finishing those quests stacks additional XP on top of the base extraction reward, making early extractions especially efficient for battle pass progression.
What happens if you lose a Sprite after extraction?
Losing a Sprite mid-match doesn't mean losing it from your collection permanently. If a Sprite goes missing before you complete an extraction, there's a recovery process using Sprite Dust. The full breakdown is in the how to recover lost Sprites guide.
Is it worth extracting every Sprite you find?
Generally, yes. Even if you already own a Sprite, extraction still earns you Sprite Dust and XP. The only real cost is time and the risk of getting caught at the Extraction Site. In low-traffic areas after the first circle, the risk-to-reward ratio is clearly in your favor.
