Fortnite's Zero Build mode just got its biggest shakeup in recent memory. Update v40.40, which dropped on May 14, 2026, treats the no-build playlist as a proper design experiment rather than a stripped-down version of the main game. Epic Games confirmed the changes are intentional and temporary for now, with player feedback during the remaining weeks of Season 2 directly shaping what Zero Build looks like next season and beyond.
What changed in Fortnite Zero Build with update v40.40?
The headline addition is Pocket Items, a new system that replaces the old Build button entirely. These are unlimited-use utility items tied to cooldowns, and you spawn into every match with one already equipped. Three options are available at launch: Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist Grenades, and Shield Bubbles. You can swap your Pocket Item at Vending Machines scattered across the map, so there's real decision-making involved in which tool you carry into the final circles.
Every player also starts each match with a Pistol, a Small Shield Potion, and their chosen Pocket Item. That guaranteed loadout removes the worst-case scenario of dropping and finding nothing useful in the first 30 seconds.
Swap your Pocket Item at Vending Machines before the mid-game, not during a fight. Shield Bubbles work best in squad revive situations, while Shockwave Grenades give you the edge in aggressive pushes.
Movement and survival changes
Several quality-of-life changes hit mobility hard, and most of them are genuinely good. You can now manually cut your Glider during the drop from the Battle Bus instead of waiting for the auto-deploy trigger near the ground. That free-fall option lets aggressive players hit the ground faster, but it's a risk if you misjudge the height.
Glider Redeploy is back for elevated positions, giving cleaner rotation options without building a ramp to safety. Holding your Pickaxe now grants unlimited Stamina, which solves one of the most frustrating parts of Zero Build rotations where you'd burn out sprinting between cover. Getting an elimination now restores your Overshield, which directly rewards pushing rather than camping.
Environmental structures also received a significant durability buff. Boulders, trees, and small buildings now absorb far more weapon damage, making natural cover actually viable in a mode where you can't throw up walls.

What are the new Zero Build exclusive items?
Two items exist only in Zero Build after this update:
- Improved Smoke Grenades offer better area coverage than the standard version, useful for breaking sightlines, covering a revive, or resetting a fight that's going sideways.
- Brick-a-Bunkers are Zero Build's take on Port-a-Bunkers. They deploy with a full ramp and doors on both sides of the walls, giving you instant cover when you need it most.
The broader loot pool has also been rebalanced to include more defensive and utility items, which makes sense given that Pocket Items are now the primary active tool players carry.
Brick-a-Bunkers are the closest thing to building that Zero Build players get. Placing one during a firefight can completely change the dynamic of a fight, especially in open areas with no natural cover nearby.
How does the fall damage change work?
Lethal fall damage is gone in both Build and Zero Build modes. A fall that would have killed you now triggers a Splat animation, drops your health to 1 HP, and strips all shields and Overshield. You survive, but barely. That single HP means any follow-up shot or storm tick finishes you off, so it's not a free pass to jump off anything.
This change creates some interesting edge cases. Players who get knocked off high ground are now a live target rather than a confirmed elimination, which adds a recovery window that didn't exist before.
Surviving a Splat with 1 HP is only useful if you have immediate cover or a healing item ready. Without either, you're still dead, just slightly slower.

Are these Zero Build changes permanent?
No. Epic Games has framed v40.40 as an experiment running through the end of Chapter 7 Season 2. The stated goal is to push Zero Build's "pure gunplay" identity further, and the feedback collected during this period will directly influence how the mode is tuned for Season 3 and beyond. Epic has said more details will follow, but nothing is locked in yet.
The Overwatch crossover arrived alongside this update, bringing Tracer, Mercy, Genji, and D.Va outfits to the shop with matching accessories and LEGO styles. There's also a Porsche Cayenne EV bundle with custom decals and wheels. The Overwatch content is live in Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload, and Blitz.
