Gray Zone Warfare shipped with three playable PMCs and a handful of AI enemies, but the 0.4 Spearhead Update fundamentally changed how the game's world operates. Seven distinct AI factions now control specific territories across Lamang Island, each with unique gear, strongholds, and a boss that drops an exclusive engraved weapon. Picking the right PMC and knowing which AI faction controls which zone before you push in can be the difference between a clean extract and a wipe.
The three playable PMCs: which one should you pick?
Every player must commit to one of three Private Military Companies at the start of the game. According to the faction details confirmed by MADFINGER Games, all three PMCs have been available since launch and share the same core gameplay systems. The difference is almost entirely narrative and aesthetic, so pick based on the identity that fits your playstyle.
danger
To squad up with friends in Warfare or Joint Ops modes, every member of your group must choose the exact same PMC. You cannot mix factions in a squad.

Choose your PMC at game start
Lamang Recovery Initiative (LRI)
LRI is backed by a tech billionaire and publicly presents itself as a philanthropic organization. On paper, their armed security teams are deployed to Lamang Island to rescue survivors and protect clean-up crews after the UN abandoned the region. If you want the "good guys" framing and a more humanitarian narrative angle, LRI is the obvious choice.
Mithras Security Systems
Mithras is a soldier-run mercenary outfit operating on a Roman Legion-inspired philosophy. The PMC values battlefield competence above everything else and distributes the spoils of war among its ranks. There is no background check, no allegiance required beyond your ability to fight. For players who want a straightforward mercenary identity without political baggage, Mithras fits.
Crimson Shield International (CSI)
CSI built its reputation during the Syrian civil war and carries a 95 percent success rate alongside a history of brutal methods and heavy collateral damage. Only the most hardened operators join, and the best among them get deployed to the hardest missions. This is the faction for players who want the elite, morally ambiguous angle.
info
You can change your faction later, but it requires wiping your character. There is a minimum 1-hour cooldown between wipes, and your character must be at least 7 days old before the first wipe is allowed.
All seven AI enemy factions and their territories
The 0.4 Spearhead Update completely redesigned the two original AI factions and added five new ones. Each now has distinct clothing, gear, loot pools, and a unique boss with an exclusive engraved weapon drop. Knowing where each faction operates before you rotate is basic map awareness.
Lamang Armed Forces (LAF)
LAF represents the remnants of Lamang's official national military. They guard the map's highest-tier loot zones aggressively, with strongholds at Fort Narith, Tiger Bay, and Midnight Sapphire. Expect well-equipped soldiers who will not give ground easily. The LAF faction boss drops an exclusive engraved AK-74M or AK-19 loaded with high-tier attachments.
Lamang Liberation Army (LLA)
LLA is the local insurgent population trapped on Lamang after the Event. They fight against both the government military and the foreign PMCs operating on the island. Their primary stronghold is the YBL-1 bunker, where they excel at close-quarters combat across tight corridors and multi-level rooms. The Rebel Leader is the only source of the blue bandana in the game.
Lotus Circle Gang
A Vietnamese organized crime syndicate that claimed the Hunter's Paradise region as their territory. Their armament is inferior to the military factions, but they defend their turf aggressively. The Lotus Circle boss drops an upgraded Mossberg 590 with a pistol grip.
Viper Tactical Services
A highly lethal Thai PMC that has locked down Pha Lang Airfield. Unlike the local militias, Viper operators use professional military tactics including suppressing fire and flanking. They carry high-end tactical gear, night vision, and advanced ballistics. The boss drops a unique CQA1 rifle.
warning
Viper Tactical Services is not a militia. Pushing Pha Lang Airfield without night vision of your own puts you at a serious disadvantage against operators who will actively flank your position.
Naga Pirates
Malay pirates exploiting the chaos on Lamang Island. They control the coastal village of Ban Pa and the nearby Tiger Bay viewpoint. Engagements here involve long-range fights across water and dense coastal vegetation. The Ban Pa boss drops a Mossberg 590 shotgun and the Elder Key.
Sifa Syndicate
Armed locals who organized into a criminal syndicate after the Event. Their stronghold is the Blue Lagoon and surrounding areas. The Sifa Syndicate wears distinct clothing that reflects their island heritage. Their boss drops an AK-74M with a T1 mount.
Red Stone Brigade
Hardened Cambodian fighters who crossed into Lamang and seized control of the Sawmill and its industrial and timber operations. They are a highly coordinated militia. The boss drops an upgraded AK-74M with an ACOG scope and the Office Storage Key.

What about console and controller support?
Gray Zone Warfare is currently PC-only. MADFINGER Games confirmed in April 2026 that a console release is planned to coincide with the game's 1.0 launch, though no date for 1.0 has been announced and it is not expected for several years. Controller support for PC is also planned but had not arrived as of March 2026.
The reason for the delay is practical. A single firefight in Gray Zone Warfare can require checking ammunition, changing firing modes, leaning, adjusting scope zoom, using tactical items, throwing grenades, changing stance, and applying healing. Mapping all of that to a controller with 16 inputs is a genuinely hard problem, which is why games like Escape from Tarkov face the same challenge.

How to approach faction encounters effectively
Each AI faction now has a distinct combat identity following the 0.4 redesign. Treating every enemy group the same way will get you killed.
- LAF guards the highest-tier loot on the map. Bring your best kit and expect a sustained fight at Fort Narith or Midnight Sapphire.
- LLA at YBL-1 bunker punishes players who push recklessly. The tight corridors favor close-range loadouts.
- Viper Tactical Services at Pha Lang Airfield uses flanking and suppression. Coordinate with your squad before pushing.
- Naga Pirates at Ban Pa require long-range capability. Bring a rifle with reach and use the coastal vegetation for cover.
- Red Stone Brigade at the Sawmill are highly coordinated. Do not treat them like disorganized militia.
