The Dreamlight Cinematics event in Heartopia brings four limited-time fish to the island, and they're exactly as absurd as they sound: tiny octopuses wearing director hats. All four variants live in the Whale Sea, spawn around the clock, and sell for solid coin if you know which ones to prioritize. This guide covers every location, shadow size, token and coin value, and the fastest way to farm them before the event ends on May 2.
Where do the Dreamlight Cinematics fish spawn in Heartopia?
Every single event octopus spawns in the Whale Sea, the body of water on the eastern side of the island near Whale Mountain. There are no other fishing spots for these variants. You won't find them in the river, the pond, or anywhere else on the map.
The good news is that all four variants are available at all hours, so there are no time-of-day restrictions to worry about. Spawn rates are on the lower side compared to regular fish, so expect to spend some time casting before you complete the set. Staying in one spot and fishing continuously beats wandering around the shoreline.
info
Cast your line from the beach closest to Whale Mountain for the most consistent results. Moving around too much resets your rhythm without improving spawn rates.

All Dreamlight Cinematics fish
There are currently four octopus variants in the event. Three are Director Pygmy Octopuses with small shadows, and one is a Director Common Octopus with a large shadow. The Common Octopus is the rarest and most valuable of the four.
All four variants spawn regardless of weather, which means rain and rainbow conditions don't give you any particular edge or disadvantage here. The Director Common Octopus with the Cinnamon Hat is the one to watch for: its large shadow makes it identifiable in the water, and a five-star catch pays out 1,720 coins compared to 800 for the pygmy variants.

Unlock Fish Attractors and Mermaid Perfume
Two fishing tools make a noticeable difference when farming these event fish:
- Mermaid Fish Attractors unlock at fishing hobby level 4. Purchase them from Vanya on Garden Street. They increase fish spawns in a small radius around your cast, reducing the time spent waiting between bites.
- Mermaid Perfume unlocks at fishing hobby level 6, also sold by Vanya. This item skips the reeling minigame entirely, letting you instantly collect the catch. For grinding multiple variants in a session, this is the bigger time-saver of the two.
Vanya is usually found near Garden Street. You first encounter him during the early fishing tutorial at the pier, after which he becomes a permanent NPC. During seasonal events, NPCs can shift positions slightly, so use your map icon tracker if he's not where you expect.
info
Level your fishing hobby before the event ends. Higher levels unlock better supplies and improve your star rating on catches, which directly multiplies your coin and token payout.
Fish with friends for better rates
Multiplayer fishing in Heartopia increases the chance of rare and shiny fish appearing. If you have friends also working through the Dreamlight Cinematics event, coordinating a fishing session in the Whale Sea is the most efficient approach. The spawn improvement stacks with Fish Attractors, so running both simultaneously gives you the best possible odds.
Identifying the right shadows
The three pygmy octopuses appear as small shadows in the water. The Director Common Octopus with the Cinnamon Hat shows up as a large shadow. If you're specifically targeting the high-value Cinnamon Hat variant, skip small shadows and wait for a larger ripple before casting.
How to sell your Dreamlight Cinematics fish
Once you've filled your inventory with event octopuses, take them to Albert Jr. to convert them into gold. Albert Jr. walks around the central area of the island and doesn't stay in one place, so open your map and look for his icon to track his current position.
Interact with him and select Sell Items from his menu. Your full inventory opens and you can select the fish you want to sell. Payouts are calculated instantly based on star rating, so higher-star catches mean significantly more gold per fish. A five-star Director Common Octopus at 1,720 coins is worth holding onto if you need a coin injection.
warning
Don't sell all your event fish immediately if you're still working through event quests. Some tasks may require you to have specific variants in your inventory before you can complete them.
