Picking the wrong stratagems on difficulty 10 doesn't just hurt your score — it gets the whole squad wiped before the first objective is done. With 78 stratagems in the pool and Arrowhead still tweaking balance patch by patch, knowing which ones actually pull their weight is the difference between a clean extraction and a four-person pile of corpses near the drop zone.
What are stratagems in Helldivers 2?
Stratagems are orbital and support assets you call in during missions using directional input sequences. Each one has a call-in time, a cooldown, and in some cases a limited number of uses per mission. You unlock them by leveling up or spending Requisition Slips, and you can upgrade most of them at the Ship Management terminal to reduce cooldowns and call-in times. You carry up to four per mission, so every slot matters.
The four categories are Offensive (airstrikes, barrages), Eagle (aircraft-delivered strikes), Defensive (shields, sentries, backpacks), and Mission (resupply, reinforcements). The best loadouts usually mix at least one heavy anti-armor option with a reliable area-denial or crowd-control tool.
Helldivers 2 stratagems tier list (difficulty 8+)
The rankings below are based on performance at difficulty 8 and above, where enemy density and armor values punish weak picks hard. Faction context matters enormously here — a stratagem that shreds Terminid hordes can be nearly useless against Automaton armor. Ratings from the r/Helldivers community tier list (March 2026) and cross-referenced testing back this up.
info
Tier placements shift between factions. The Autocannon is arguably S-tier against Automatons and drops to A-tier against Terminids where the Flamethrower and Orbital Laser compete for the same slot.
S-tier stratagems: what makes them essential?
According to both Mobalytics' stratagem analysis and community rankings across 164 submitted tier lists on TierMaker, the best Helldivers 2 stratagems share three traits: they handle armored targets reliably, they have manageable cooldowns, and they work against at least two of the three factions.
Autocannon
Unlock level 10. Cooldown: 480 seconds. The Autocannon is the single best anti-Automaton support weapon in the game. It punches through light and medium armor with ease, handles Devastators and Hulks efficiently, and reloads faster than any comparable heavy weapon. The backpack requirement means you give up a slot, but the output justifies it completely. After running it across dozens of bot missions, it consistently outperforms the Recoilless Rifle in time-to-kill on medium targets.
Quasar Cannon
The Quasar Cannon fills the anti-armor role without needing a backpack, trading a charge-up delay for infinite ammo. It one-shots Charger legs, cracks Bile Titan heads, and handles Automaton Gunships cleanly. The charge time punishes you if you're caught in the open, but with positioning it's the most versatile heavy weapon available.
Eagle 500KG Bomb
Unlock level 15. Single use per eagle rearm cycle. The Eagle 500KG Bomb is the benchmark for single-target destruction. One direct hit kills anything in the game, including Factory Striders and Bile Titans. The catch is the one-use limit before the Eagle must rearm, but pairing it with faster Eagle rearm upgrades from the ship terminal makes it far more accessible in longer missions.
Orbital Laser
Unlock level 15. 3 uses per mission. Cooldown: 300 seconds. The Orbital Laser sweeps across a target area automatically, hitting every enemy in its path and igniting the ground for secondary damage. It's the closest thing to a reliable panic button in the game — drop it on a Bug Breach or a dense Automaton patrol and it handles cleanup without any further input. The three-use limit is the only real constraint.
A-tier stratagems: strong picks with conditions
Grenade Launcher
Unlock level 5. Cooldown: 480 seconds. The Grenade Launcher is the most utility-dense support weapon in the game. It closes Bug Holes and Automaton Fabricators from a safe distance without spending grenades or triggering an orbital, handles Spore Towers and antenna objectives remotely, and still kills medium infantry reliably. The friendly-fire risk is real but manageable with awareness.
Orbital 380MM HE Barrage
Unlock level 8. Cooldown: 240 seconds. The Orbital 380MM HE Barrage covers a massive area with sustained explosive damage. It destroys structures, clears dense enemy clusters, and denies entire zones for its duration. The spread means you need distance from the impact site, but for objective demolition and base clearing it has no equal among barrages.
Guard Dog Rover
Unlock level 10. Cooldown: 480 seconds. The Guard Dog Rover drone autonomously fires a laser rifle at nearby enemies while you move. It handles the small, fast threats that get past your primary weapon — Hunters, Scavengers, and Voteless swarms especially — freeing you to focus on priority targets. It returns to the backpack to recharge when its battery depletes.
info
The Guard Dog Rover pairs extremely well with the Quasar Cannon. The drone handles chaff while you charge shots on armored targets, covering the main vulnerability of slow-charging weapons.
How do stratagems change between factions?
Faction matchup is the most underrated variable in stratagem selection. The same loadout that clears a Terminid Extermination mission on difficulty 9 can fall apart completely on an Automaton Eradication at the same difficulty.
Against Terminids: Fire-based stratagems perform above their overall tier rating. The Flamethrower melts Brood Commanders and Charger legs, and the Orbital Gas Strike stuns and corrodes entire groups. The Autocannon Sentry handles medium bugs well, and the Eagle 500KG Bomb is the go-to for Bile Titans when the Quasar Cannon isn't in the loadout.
Against Automatons: Precision tools outperform area-denial. The Autocannon, Railgun, and Orbital Precision Strike reward accurate play against specific weak points. The Orbital 380MM HE Barrage still works for base demolition, but random spread is more punishing when every miss lets a Hulk survive.
Against the Illuminate: Crowd control and sustained damage win. The Orbital Laser and Guard Dog Rover handle Voteless swarms efficiently. The Quasar Cannon is the primary answer to Harvesters.
What's the best stratagem loadout for solo play?
Solo play at high difficulty punishes cooldown-heavy loadouts hard. The ideal solo setup prioritizes self-sufficiency: one heavy anti-armor tool, one crowd-control option, one defensive asset, and one utility pick.
A tested setup that works across all three factions:
- Quasar Cannon (anti-armor, no backpack slot required)
- Orbital Precision Strike (cooldown 100 seconds, unlimited uses, accurate single-target)
- Guard Dog Rover (passive protection against swarms)
- Eagle 500KG Bomb (emergency heavy kill)
The Shield Generator Pack is worth considering as a Rover replacement if you're running missions with heavy projectile spam, particularly on Automaton planets.
warning
The Shield Generator Relay (the ground-placed version) is nearly useless in mobile missions. It only covers a small static area and enemies simply walk around it. Don't confuse it with the Shield Generator Pack backpack, which is significantly more useful.
B-tier and below: when do these stratagems work?
Not every stratagem below S-tier is bad — most have specific contexts where they outperform higher-ranked options.
The Railgun in unsafe mode, fully charged, still one-shots Charger legs and cracks Bile Titan heads. It dropped from S-tier after Arrowhead's adjustments required the unsafe toggle and longer charge times to penetrate heavy armor, but players who master the charge timing still get strong results. The Stalwart light machine gun is excellent for horde-clear specialists who want to preserve primary ammo for priority targets.
The Mortar Sentry sits in D-tier for a reason: its targeting is imprecise enough to kill teammates regularly in dense fights, and its area coverage overlaps with better options. The Eagle Napalm Airstrike similarly suffers from placement difficulty and the fire lingering in your path after the strike.

How to upgrade stratagems effectively
Ship upgrades at the Acquisitions terminal reduce cooldowns, call-in times, and in some cases add uses. Prioritizing upgrades for your most-used stratagems compounds their value significantly over a campaign.
The upgrades that matter most:
- Eagle rearm speed (reduces the rearm cooldown after all Eagle uses are spent)
- Orbital cooldown reduction (applies to all orbital stratagems)
- Sentry range/health upgrades (extends effective coverage and survival time)
Don't spread Requisition Slips across every category evenly. Pick the two or three stratagems you rely on most and max their upgrade paths before touching others.

Stratagem balance changes with every major patch. The tier placements in this guide reflect the state of the game as of March 2026. Arrowhead has a history of significant adjustments — the Railgun nerf and subsequent partial buffs being the clearest example — so check patch notes before locking in a loadout for a new season.
