Ken Kutaragi, the man who built the PlayStation from the ground up, is heading to the UK for a rare public appearance at the Game Republic New Horizons conference in Middlesbrough this October.
Public appearances from Kutaragi are genuinely rare events. Since stepping down from Sony Computer Entertainment in 2007, the former Chairman and Group CEO has largely stayed out of the spotlight, taking on board-level roles at companies including Rakuten, Kadokawa, SmartNews, and GA Technologies. He currently serves as CEO of both Ascent Robotics and Cyber AI Entertainment, but the conference circuit has not exactly been a regular fixture for him.
What Kutaragi actually built
To call Kutaragi influential is an understatement. He was the driving force behind the original PlayStation, the PlayStation 2, and the PlayStation 3, three consoles that collectively shifted hundreds of millions of units and reshaped the entire games industry. The original PlayStation alone broke open the CD-ROM era for gaming and pulled in an audience that the medium had never previously reached. The PS2 went on to become the best-selling home console of all time with over 155 million units sold.
His tenure at Sony was not without turbulence. The PS3 launch in 2006 was famously expensive and technically ambitious to a fault, with a price point that drew serious criticism. But the hardware architecture Kutaragi championed, including the Cell processor, pushed the industry's conversation about what game hardware could be. He left Sony the following year.
What the Middlesbrough event looks like
Game Republic New Horizons runs October 14-16 at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough, with the main conference day on October 15. Kutaragi is confirmed as the first keynote speaker and will sit down for an on-stage interview with journalist Chris Dring from The Game Business. A meet-and-greet session with attendees is also planned.
The conference is only in its second year. Last year's inaugural event featured talks tied to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from MachineGames, Supercell, Kickstarter, and TV comedian Maisie Adam. Securing Kutaragi as a headliner for year two is a significant step up in profile.
"I am absolutely delighted to be coming to the UK to take part in the Game Republic New Horizons conference," Kutaragi said in a statement. "I am looking forward to sharing my experience and lifetime of innovation and my insights on future opportunities with all the attendees."
Why this appearance stands out
Here's the thing: events that put genuine gaming history on a stage in a format where attendees can actually interact are increasingly uncommon. Most major industry figures cycle through the same handful of large-scale events. A regional UK conference landing Kutaragi as a keynote, with a meet-and-greet attached, is the kind of access that money usually cannot buy at bigger shows.
For anyone working in the UK games industry or simply wanting to hear directly from the person who made the PlayStation happen, this is a hard opportunity to pass up.
