"Master of the ninja arts Joe Musashi will face his fiercest battles yet as he takes on three legendary Sega foes," reads the official description, and honestly, that sentence alone should have you marking your calendar.

Sega and developer Lizardcube have confirmed that the Sega Villains Stage DLC for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance launches on April 3 across all platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The DLC was first teased back in October, and now it finally has a date.

Three Iconic Villains, Five New Stages

The headliners here are hard to argue with. Death Adder from Golden Axe, Goro Majima from Like a Dragon / Yakuza, and Dr. Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog are all stepping into Joe Musashi's path. Each boss brings worlds "inspired by beloved Sega franchises," which means you're getting environments that should feel distinct from anything in the base game.

Five new stages in total. That's a decent chunk of content for a single DLC drop.

Beyond the stages and boss fights, the package includes:

  • Two new Boss Rush modes
  • Three new ninpo abilities
  • Three new outfits for Joe Musashi
  • Six new music tracks

The music angle is worth noting. The base game's soundtrack was composed by Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage) and Tee Lopes (Sonic Mania), so the bar for these six new tracks is already set pretty high.

Pricing and Who Already Has It

If you own the Digital Deluxe Edition, the Sega Villains Stage DLC is already included, no extra purchase needed. Standard Edition owners can pick it up separately for £8.99, or upgrade to the Digital Deluxe Edition for £10.99.

Straightforward pricing, no surprises.

The Free Update Dropping the Same Day

Here's the thing, the DLC isn't the only reason to log back in on April 3. Sega confirmed a free update patch is also dropping on the same day, adding a new Hardcore Mode to the base game. The patch will also bring combat system adjustments alongside tweaks to character outlines, maps, and tutorial display features.

That means even players who skip the DLC entirely are getting something new.

A Strong Foundation for DLC to Build On

The Sega Villains Stage DLC is arriving into a game that already has a lot of goodwill behind it. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance drew comparisons to what Lizardcube did with Streets of Rage 4, praised for its hand-drawn visuals, tight combat, and that exceptional soundtrack. Dropping a crossover DLC that pulls from Golden Axe, Yakuza, and Sonic into that foundation is a smart move, and it rewards players who stuck around after launch.

For the full breakdown of what's included in the official DLC announcement, April 3 is shaping up to be a big day for fans of the game. Keep an eye on gaming news for any last-minute reveals before launch. Make sure to check out more:
