How to Get Lord Icons in Marvel Rivals

Hero Proficiency in Marvel Rivals is the game's way of tracking how much time you've put into a specific character, and it pays you back with a steady stream of cosmetics for doing exactly what you'd be doing anyway: playing your main. The Lord icon sitting at level 20 is the first milestone that actually turns heads during hero select, and it's reachable without any special tricks.

How does Hero Proficiency work in Marvel Rivals?

Every hero has their own Proficiency track, accessible directly from their hero profile. Leveling that track up requires completing missions listed under the Proficiency tab, which award points toward the next level. There are two mission types to keep in mind.

Permanent missions have no daily cap and count progress made in both Quick Match and Competitive. Daily missions reset each day and can be completed up to 15 times per day, but they're restricted to the Arcade playlist. Running both types simultaneously is the fastest way to stack points.

The missions themselves are built around your hero's role. Duelists need to deal damage and land final hits. Vanguards progress by blocking damage and securing KOs. Strategists earn points through healing output and assists. Playing off-role on a character you're grinding will slow things down noticeably, so stick to what the role actually asks you to do.

tip
Daily missions cap at 15 completions per day, so if you're doing a focused grind session, knock those out first before switching to permanent missions.

How long does it take to reach Lord in Marvel Rivals?

Reaching Lord (level 20) takes roughly 20 hours of gameplay on that specific character. That's not a small ask, but it's also not the kind of grind that requires a spreadsheet. Play the hero, complete the role-based missions, and the level will come naturally.

For context, Lord is not the ceiling. The Proficiency track runs all the way to level 70, and the animated Champion icon at level 50 is the true flex for dedicated players. Getting from Lord to Champion is a substantially longer commitment, so treat level 20 as the first meaningful milestone rather than the finish line.

warning
Proficiency only tracks progress on the specific hero you're playing. Hours on one character do not carry over to another, so pick your main before starting a serious grind.

What are all the Proficiency rewards in Marvel Rivals?

The full reward track runs from level 1 to level 70, covering nameplates, titles, KO prompts, currency drops, badges, frames, and icons. Here's every reward at every level:

The currency rewards scattered throughout the track (Units and Unstable Molecules) are a nice bonus, but the real draws are the cosmetic unlocks: the Lord icon at 20, the colored frames at 30 and 40, and the animated Champion icon at 50.

Which heroes are worth grinding Proficiency on?

This comes down to your playstyle, but the most efficient approach is to grind Proficiency on a hero you're already playing in Competitive. Since permanent missions work in both Quick Match and Competitive, every ranked game contributes to the track. There's no reason to play a character you don't enjoy just to unlock their Lord icon faster.

If you're still figuring out which hero fits your style, the Season 4 hero tier list and best heroes guide breaks down which characters are performing well right now, which makes it a solid starting point before committing 20 hours to a specific pick.

tip
Proficiency tracks are per-hero and independent of each other. Grinding multiple characters simultaneously is possible, but your total daily mission completions are still capped at 15 per hero per day.

Tips for grinding Proficiency efficiently

  • Prioritize daily missions first each session since they cap at 15 completions and are time-limited.
  • Play Arcade for daily missions since that playlist is the only one where they count.
  • Stick to your hero's role during permanent missions. Duelists should push for final hits, Vanguards should focus on blocking and KOs, and Strategists should prioritize heal numbers.
  • Combine Competitive and Quick Match for permanent missions so ranked games aren't wasted.
  • Don't split your grind across too many heroes at once early on. Reaching Lord on one character first gives you a clear milestone and keeps the grind from feeling endless.

For players who want to understand a specific hero's mechanics before investing the time, the Magneto Vanguard guide is a good example of how deep the role-specific knowledge goes. Understanding your hero's kit makes the role missions feel natural rather than forced.

tip
The Arcade playlist is where daily missions count, but don't ignore Quick Match and Competitive for permanent missions. Running both simultaneously is the most time-efficient approach.

What comes after Lord?

Lord at level 20 is the first icon unlock, but the track keeps going for another 50 levels. The next major visual reward is the purple character frame at level 30 (Colonel), followed by the yellow character frame at level 40 (Elite), and finally the animated Champion icon at level 50. Levels 55 through 70 deliver badges, titles, and nameplates that round out the full cosmetic set for that character.
