Marvel Rivals Season 7 has completely reshaped how competitive ranked works, and if you're heading into placement matches without understanding the new systems, you're leaving rank points on the table. NetEase has pushed three major changes to Competitive mode: a redesigned placement match framework that tracks your personal performance, expanded hero bans, and a returning fan-favorite map. Here's everything you need to know to hit the ground running.

What Changed in the Season 7 Placement Match System?
The biggest shift in Season 7 is how placement matches actually determine your starting rank. Previously, your placement outcome was tied heavily to whether your teammates performed well, which frustrated solo players who felt carried or dragged by their squad. NetEase addressed this directly with a performance-based approach.
Every one of your 10 placement matches now records your individual contribution separately from your team's win-loss record. Once all 10 matches are complete, your rank receives an adjustment ranging from -100 to +100 competitive points depending on how well you personally performed and which tier you're operating in.
According to detailed placement match tracking data, your win-loss record still accounts for roughly 90% of your final placement outcome. Going 5-5 will land you close to your projected starting rank, while a strong 7-3 or better run can push you meaningfully higher.
Beyond the point adjustment, there's a division bonus system attached:
- Perform well across all 10 matches and earn a one division bonus (moving you up one full division)
- Perform poorly and lose one division from your projected placement
- The maximum swing in either direction is capped at one division
Focus on consistent personal performance metrics across all 10 placement matches, not just winning. MVP and SVP designations during placements directly influence your final adjustment.
This change specifically targets players who used to stack with higher-elo friends to inflate their placement rank. Since individual stats are now tracked independently, riding teammates through placements will no longer produce the same result.

How Do the New Hero Ban Rules Work?
The ban phase has expanded significantly in Season 7. Both teams can now ban 3 heroes each per match, up from the previous limit of 2. That means up to 6 heroes total are removed from the pool before a single pick is made, which has real implications for how you approach hero selection.
To keep the draft moving at pace, each individual ban is now limited to 15 seconds (reduced from 20 seconds). The total ban phase takes less time despite adding an extra ban per team, so you need to know your priorities before the draft screen opens.
As detailed in the Season 7 competitive changes breakdown, this was one of the most-requested adjustments from the community, particularly at higher ranks where dominant meta heroes were causing frustration.
With 3 bans per team, coordinate with your squad before the match to decide which heroes to prioritize banning. Targeting the enemy team's known one-tricks is now more viable than ever.
Here's a quick comparison of the ban phase changes:
The ban phase activates once all players in a lobby are Gold III or higher, so if you're climbing through lower ranks, you won't see this system until you reach that threshold.
What's New in the Season 7 Map Pool?
Tokyo 2099: Shin-Shibuya is back in the Competitive rotation after its absence. This map has been one of the most requested returns from the community, praised for its distinctive structure and visual design. Its return gives the competitive pool more variety and rewards players who have studied its layout.
Additionally, a brand-new Convergence map called Lower Manhattan was introduced in Season 7, with its competitive debut scheduled for April 3rd. That gives you time to practice it in other modes before it appears in ranked.
Lower Manhattan enters the competitive rotation on April 3rd. Use Quick Play and custom matches in the days before to learn its sightlines and objective flow before it counts toward your rank.

How Does the Rank System Interact With These Changes?
The core rank structure remains unchanged in Season 7. There are still 9 tiers (Bronze through One Above All), with 7 of those tiers split into three divisions each, creating 23 total skill divisions. The 100-point threshold per division and 300-point threshold per full rank remain in place.
What matters for placement is understanding where you can realistically land. The maximum placement ceiling is Celestial I, regardless of your previous season performance. The floor is Bronze III. Your projected starting rank is based on last season's results, and your 10 placement matches then adjust from there.
Rank distribution data from March 2026 shows the competitive player base sits heaviest in Bronze at 25.01%, with Platinum through Diamond making up the largest mid-tier concentration. The average rank sits around Platinum III/II, so if you're aiming to place above average, you need a winning record in placements.
Placement matches cap team sizes at 3 players maximum, and rank differences between the highest and lowest player in a group are limited to 3 divisions. Trying to stack a full 6-player lobby for placements will not work.
Season 7 Ranked Rewards and What You're Playing For
Reaching Gold rank or above in Season 7 earns you the exclusive White Fox - Secret Agent costume. This is the primary ranked reward this season and gives players a clear target to aim for during placements and the climb that follows.
The Season 7 Battle Pass (titled Tablet of Life and Time) includes 10 full costume sets for heroes including Hela, Peni Parker, and Luna Snow. Separately, completing missions in the Dual Life of Peter Parker event unlocks the Deadpool - Wade Wilson: The Spirit Guard costume for free.
For players interested in the broader competitive ecosystem, the Marvel Rivals Ignite Preseason kicks off March 27th with an integrated esports hub built directly into the game client. You can watch live matches, track standings, and follow tournament brackets without leaving Marvel Rivals.
