Monster Hunter Stories 3 Guide: All Feral Monsters & How to Beat Them

Feral Monsters are some of the most dangerous enemies you will face in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. Corrupted by the blightstone and driven into a frenzy, these creatures carry altered elemental affinities and brutal feral attacks that differ from their normal counterparts. Whether you are tracking them down across regions or facing them as story bosses, knowing exactly how each one behaves, what it is weak to, and which Monsties to bring will make the difference between a clean win and a wipe.

What Are Feral Monsters in MHS3?

Feral Monsters are regular species that have been afflicted by the blightstone, a corrupting substance that sends them into a violent frenzy. The blightstone does more than just make them aggressive. It also shifts their elemental typing away from what you would expect, meaning a monster that is normally fire-based might show up with ice attacks, and vice versa. On top of that, each Feral Monster carries at least one signature feral attack that is far more powerful than anything its standard version can produce.

There are two main categories to keep in mind:

  • Habitat Feral Monsters: Found roaming specific regions and tied to campsite unlocks for Habitat Restoration.
  • Story Feral Monsters: Scripted encounters during main quests, with fixed levels and movesets.

How to Beat Feral Nerscylla

Feral Nerscylla is an optional boss found at Mirror Lake in the Broadleaf Basin area, northwest of Azuria Castle. It is a two-phase fight built around fire damage and sleep status, so preparation is everything here.

  • Elemental Weakness: Water
  • Elemental Resistance: Fire

Feral Nerscylla Attack Pattern

This fight has two distinct phases. In its Normal State, the blightstone on its body glows visibly. It opens with a Technical attack on Turn 1, follows with Sealing Needle on Turn 2, and then unleashes Feral Sleep Gas (AoE sleep) on Turn 3 before transitioning to Enraged. Hitting its Needle part during the Normal State triggers a Backlash (Fire) counterattack, so avoid targeting that part until the phase shifts.

In its Enraged State, the glow disappears. The Nerscylla shifts focus to inflicting Sleep with Sleeping Needle on Turn 1 and potentially Sleep Chaser on Turn 2 if sleep lands. Turn 4 always ends with Feral Spreading Beam, a powerful AoE fire attack, before it resets to Normal.

Best Strategy for Feral Nerscylla

  • Equip water element weapons to maximize damage output.
  • Wear Kut-Ku Armor or Nerscylla Armor for fire resistance or sleep resistance respectively.
  • Bring Ogden as your Battle Ally. He has natural fire resistance, uses Technical attacks that counter the Normal State head-to-heads, and can disrupt Feral Nerscylla with traps.
  • Recommended Monsties: Yian Kut-Ku (fire resistance, Technical coverage) and Royal Ludroth (Power and Water attack coverage). Boltreaver Astalos and Anjanath are excellent upgrades if you have their eggs.
  • During the Enraged State, focus attacks on the Needle part to destroy it. Once broken, its feral skills downgrade to weaker versions with lower damage and reduced ailment chance.
  • When Turn 3 (Normal) or Turn 4 (Enraged) approaches, either stagger the boss or use a Kinship Skill to interrupt the feral move entirely.

How to Beat Feral Aknosom

Feral Aknosom is a main story boss encountered during the Ward quest. It sits at Level 27, so aim to reach at least Level 25 before engaging.

  • Elemental Weakness: Thunder
  • Elemental Resistance: Ice

Feral Aknosom Attack Pattern

Despite being classified as an Ice-category Monstie, Feral Aknosom hits hard with Fire-type moves throughout its Normal State. It opens with a Technical attack, then cycles through single-target Fireball and the AoE Fireball Frolick. The blightstone on its head is active during this phase, and striking the head triggers Backlash (Seal), which can apply Skillseal to the attacker.

Once it shifts to its Enraged State, it switches to Power attacks and introduces Ice-type moves including Feral Ice Wave and Feral Ice Drill. Both of these can apply Skillseal and also inflict Wyvernsoul Def Down on the Feral Aknosom itself, which is a great opening for damage. During the Enraged State, you are safe to target the head since the blightstone counter is inactive.

Best Strategy for Feral Aknosom

  • Equip Kut-Ku U armor for solid defense and strong fire resistance.
  • Use Thunder-type weapons like the Spark Slicer to exploit the elemental weakness while covering Slash-type body part targeting.
  • Recommended Monsties: Tobi-Kadachi for Thunder attacks and Dreadqueen Rathian for high Fire resistance plus Speed attacks during the Enraged phase.
  • Never strike the head during the Normal State to avoid the Skillseal counter.

How to Beat Feral Somnacanth

Feral Somnacanth appears during the Forbidden Ground main quest in Canalta Timberland. It is Level 18, so get your party to at least Level 17 beforehand. Critically, you cannot adjust your party or visit camps during the stretch from The Northern Meridian quest onward, so prepare everything during The Hostile Encounter quest.

  • Elemental Resistance: Thunder

Feral Somnacanth Attack Pattern

This is a three-phase fight. In its Normal State, Feral Somnacanth primarily uses Feral Plasma Cannon, a powerful AoE Thunder attack that can paralyze the whole party and also applies Wyvernsoul Def Down to itself after firing. Use that opening to push heavy damage.

When it enters its Balancing State via Siren Song, it shifts to Speed attacks and tries to put allies to sleep with Sleep Powder Spray. If sleep lands, it follows with Siren's Temptation for massive damage. Switch to Technical-type attacks during this phase for head-to-heads.

In the Balancing (Storing Powder) State, it uses Deep Sleep Powder which can put multiple allies under at once. If the protagonist falls asleep, Feral Somnacanth immediately returns to Normal State and fires Feral Plasma Cannon for enormous damage.

Best Strategy for Feral Somnacanth

  • Equip Kadachi Armor for Thunder resistance to reduce Feral Plasma Cannon damage.
  • Use Fire or Ice-type weapons (such as the Arko Nulo-White or Vicello Nulo-Red) to target the elemental weakness.
  • Bring Paracare items and consider giving Monsties the Antiparalysis Gene to handle Thunder paralysis.
  • Recommended Monsties: Dreadqueen Rathian for powerful Fire attacks, plus Anjanath or Yian Kut-Ku to cover Technical and Speed head-to-heads while contributing Fire damage.
  • After Feral Plasma Cannon, exploit the Wyvernsoul Def Down window with your strongest attacks.
  • During the Balancing State, actively work to break the Wyvernsoul Gauge to prevent Sleep Powder Spray from activating at all.

What Feral Attacks Should You Watch Out For?

Every Feral Monster carries a signature feral attack tied to its blightstone corruption. Here is what to expect from the ones with confirmed feral moves:

  • Feral Velocidrome (Ice): Backlash (Seal) or Feral Dreadful Roar
  • Feral Velocidrome (Fire): Feral Oppressive Roar
  • Feral Gypceros: Backlash (Nox Psn)
  • Feral Nerscylla: Counterattack (triggered by Needle hits in Normal State)
  • Feral Brachydios: Counterattack

The pattern across all feral encounters is consistent: attacking a blightstone-affected body part during the Normal State almost always triggers a punishing counter. Learn which part is glowing on each monster and avoid it until the enraged phase removes the counter condition.
