The map in Mortal Shell II starts completely fogged over, and just wandering around won't fix that. Unlike most action games where exploration automatically reveals the world, Mortal Shell 2 requires you to track down specific map fragments held by a character named Ruk. Miss this system early and you'll spend hours stumbling through regions with no idea what's ahead.
Why doesn't exploring clear the fog automatically?
This is the question most players ask within the first hour. The fog of war on your map is tied entirely to collecting map fragments, not to physical exploration. You can run through every corner of a region and the map stays dark. The only way to reveal an area is to find Ruk at his various locations and interact with the pedestal he guards.
The good news is the game points you toward him. After finishing the prologue, crow markers appear on your map at each Ruk location. These markers are your navigation targets, so the system isn't hidden so much as easy to overlook if you're sprinting toward the first boss.
How to get your first map in Mortal Shell 2
The first map most players encounter covers the Fainweald region. Here's the path from the Widow's Overlook Beacon, which is where you'll likely be standing after the prologue wraps up.
Route to the Map of Fainweald
- From the Widow's Overlook Beacon, head southeast along the path.
- You'll pass a large arena on your right. This is where the Great Arbiter of Flesh boss fight triggers. Skip it for now unless you've already found a Shell, since this is a tough encounter.
- Continue straight past the arena until you hit a group of cultist enemies. Clear them out.
- Keep moving toward the large tree ahead. Flying enemies circle it and their projectiles hit hard, so either deal with them or move quickly.
- Look to the right of the tree for a jump pad.
- Use the jump pad to reach the top of the hill.
- Find Ruk sitting on a statue at the top. Interact with the pedestal.
Collecting the Map of Fainweald does two things: it removes the fog from that region and immediately marks three Corrupt Gates on your map. Each Corrupt Gate contains a powerful boss guarding a Beacon, and cleansing those Beacons rewards a significant amount of Ova.

Mortal Shell 2 Map Guide: How to Find All 11 Fragments [Guide]
What do the crow markers on the map mean?
Every crow icon on your map marks a Ruk location. Each one holds a map fragment for a different part of the world. The markers are visible from the start, so you can plan a route to clear the fog systematically rather than stumbling across fragments by accident.
The crow markers make this one of the more player-friendly navigation systems in the soulslike genre. You always know where the next fragment is, even if the path to reach it requires some work.

How many maps are there in Mortal Shell 2?
There are 11 map fragments total scattered across the world. Finding all 11 clears every region's fog and unlocks the "Sat Nav" achievement or trophy, depending on your platform.
Each fragment follows the same basic loop: find the crow marker, navigate to Ruk, interact with the pedestal. The challenge is the traversal between markers, not the collection itself.
Is it worth collecting all 11 fragments?
Absolutely, and not just for the trophy. Playing with a fully fogged map in a game this size is genuinely painful. The Corrupt Gate markers alone justify hunting every fragment early, since those boss locations feed directly into your Ova income and progression.
