NBA THE RUN is developer Play by Play Studios' attempt to bring back the spirit of arcade street basketball, and based on everything the game offers at launch, it's a serious effort. Fast 3v3 matches, a stacked roster of real NBA players, randomized rule sets that flip matches on their head, and five fictional Street Legends who dominate the court in ways the pros can't quite match. Here's everything you need to know to hit the ground running.
What game modes does NBA The Run have?
Three modes cover the full experience at launch. Knockout Squads puts you on a team of three against another squad online, with an AI filling any empty slot if you can't round up a full crew. Knockout Solos lets you go it alone, controlling either a single character or your entire three-man team depending on how you want to play. Both are solid entry points.
Then there are Tournaments, which are where the real tension lives. Each tournament run consists of four rounds, with individual matches lasting roughly two to three minutes. Lose a single round and your run is over. No second chances, no consolation bracket. That single-elimination pressure is exactly what keeps you queuing for one more run.

How does the roster work?
The launch roster sits at 32 players, covering a strong mix of current stars and a few names that should appeal to fans across eras. Confirmed names include Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Davis, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Victor Wembanyama, Cooper Flagg, Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball, Jalen Brunson, Scottie Barnes, Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, and Anthony Edwards, among others. More players are scheduled to arrive during the 2026-27 season.
Every player comes with individual strengths and weaknesses, and most have access to two six-star abilities, which are the highest-rated skills in the game. A crown icon appears next to any skill a player has fully mastered, making it easy to spot their peak capabilities in the team selection UI.

What are Rookie Variants?
Five players have Rookie Variants available: Stephen Curry (Warriors '09), Luka Doncic (Mavericks '18), Kevin Durant (SuperSonics '07), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and LeBron James. These are earlier-career versions of each player with different skill sets compared to their current forms.
The Deluxe Edition ($39.99) includes three of these variants (Curry Warriors '09, Doncic Mavericks '18, and Durant SuperSonics '07) alongside 1000 CRED of in-game currency. The base game is priced at $29.99.
Who are the Street Legends?
Street Legends are a separate category from the standard NBA roster and they play differently. The five confirmed Legends are Shen Tong, Spin Cycle, El Gigante, DJ (Destiny "DJ" Jackson), and Bobbito. Each one dominates a specific area of play while carrying a deliberate limitation in another, keeping them balanced without making them feel like free wins.
The key difference from regular players: Street Legends have access to three six-star abilities instead of the standard two. That extra elite skill creates real opportunities in the right lineup. They're unlockable through progression rather than available from the start, so building toward them is one of the cleaner long-term goals the game offers.

How do randomized modifiers change each match?
This is where NBA The Run separates itself from a straightforward arcade basketball game. Each match applies randomized rule sets that add buffs or debuffs to specific actions or player skills. Some examples from what's confirmed: dunks-only scoring conditions, or a shift toward three-pointer emphasis that forces you to completely rethink your approach mid-run.
The right modifier with the right roster can make you feel unstoppable. The wrong one can expose gaps in your team composition fast. This is why team building isn't just about picking your three favorite players. You want a squad that can adapt when the rules shift underneath you.
Team chemistry also feeds into a skill evaluation system that scores you on improvisation and coordination, not just points scored. The specifics of how that scoring breaks down haven't been fully detailed yet, but it runs alongside the modifier system to reward players who adapt rather than just grind the same moves.
What courts are available?
The game launches with 11 courts drawn from real-world street basketball locations. Venice Beach and Harlem are among the confirmed locations, alongside Dongdan and others spread across different regions. The standout location based on descriptions is The Tenement, a court where the surrounding building floors serve as viewing areas for the match below. The cel-shaded art style gives every court a comic book quality that suits the arcade tone well.
What about commentary and cosmetics?
Bobbito Garcia handles commentary duties and doubles as a playable Street Legend. He recorded over 3,000 lines of dialogue across more than 50 hours of material, which is a meaningful investment in keeping the commentary booth from going stale. Anyone familiar with his work in older basketball titles knows he brings the right energy to this format.
On the cosmetics side, progression unlocks are limited to visual items only. Skills and competitive advantages are available to all players regardless of progression level, with Street Legends being the one exception. That's a clean design choice that keeps the game from feeling pay-to-win while still giving you something to work toward.
