IO Interactive just got a taste of what happens when physical discs ship before launch day. The opening mission of 007 First Light hit YouTube early after players who received physical copies got curious, and the developer's response was sharp: pull the leak, then post the footage themselves.

007 First Light opening mission
The game has been in development since at least 2020, making this one of IO Interactive's longest-running projects. Six years is a long time to keep a Bond game under wraps, and it turns out the final stretch was the hardest part.
How the leak happened
The situation follows a familiar pattern. Physical retail copies arrived in the hands of players before the official worldwide launch, and at least one person uploaded the entire opening mission to YouTube. The clip spread quickly, giving prospective buyers their first real look at how the game opens.
Here's the thing though: only the first mission is actually playable from the disc. The rest of the game requires an online download to access, so anyone hoping to play through the full campaign early hit a wall fast. The disc essentially functions as a licence key with a single playable chunk attached, which is increasingly standard practice for major releases.
IO Interactive's copyright strike and counter-move
The original YouTube upload is gone. Clicking through to it now surfaces a message confirming the takedown: "This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by IO Interactive A/S." Standard procedure, and entirely expected.
What came next was less expected. Rather than leaving the situation at a removal notice, IO Interactive published their own video titled "The First 13 Minutes of 007 First Light" directly to their official YouTube channel. The description reads: "Since a few users got hold of the disc early, watch the first 13 minutes of the opening mission in 007 First Light, as intended on day 1. Spoilers ahead, so if you'd rather save it for the in-game experience, best steer clear."
The move is smart. Instead of letting a low-quality leak shape first impressions, the studio controlled the presentation and put the footage out on their own terms.
The official IO Interactive video contains genuine spoilers for the game's opening. If you want the opening mission completely fresh, skip it until after launch.
What the footage actually shows
Thirteen minutes is a meaningful slice of any game's opening. For an adventure game like 007 First Light, the opening mission typically sets the tone for pacing, controls, and the overall feel of the world. Players who have watched the footage report it carries DNA from IO Interactive's Hitman work, but the Bond identity is distinct enough to stand on its own.
The developer has been careful to frame the release as "as intended on day 1," which signals confidence in what those 13 minutes deliver. It reads less like damage control and more like a studio that knows its opening is strong enough to sell the game on its own.

What this means before launch
Physical leaks at this scale are rare but not unprecedented. The key here is that IO Interactive moved fast, keeping the narrative from being defined by shaky cam footage and compression artifacts. The official version is clean, properly captioned, and framed with context.
For anyone still on the fence about the game, the 13-minute video is the most honest preview available right now. If the opening grabs you, that's a good sign. If you'd rather go in blind, the spoiler warning in IO's own description is worth taking seriously.
