58 Consoles Hunting a 1-in-9-Million Shiny Duck in Pokemon Sapphire

Content creator Professor Rex is running 58 consoles simultaneously in Pokemon Sapphire to chase a level 25 shiny Golduck with estimated 1-in-9-million odds. That could still run away.

Picture a room packed with 25 Wiis and 33 GameCubes, all wired up and running the same copy of Pokemon Sapphire simultaneously, all controlled by a single person with one controller. That person is content creator Professor Rex, and the target of this absurd operation is a Golduck. Specifically, a level 25 shiny Golduck in the Hoenn Safari Zone with odds Rex himself estimates at roughly 1 in 9 million. If you play Pokémon Pokopia or any other Pokemon title and think your shiny hunts are dedicated, Rex is here to recalibrate your expectations.

The 58-console array runs through Pokemon Box's Adventure Mode, which allows Pokemon Sapphire to be played on GameCube and Wii hardware. Rex can advance all 58 instances in tandem, multiplying his encounter rate by the same factor. The setup has been described by Rex as "the world's CRAZIEST shiny hunting setup," and it is genuinely difficult to argue with that.

Why a Golduck and not a Legendary

Here's the thing: the target being a Golduck is exactly what makes this story so compelling. Rex is not after a Legendary Pokemon. He is not even after something particularly flashy. He wants a level 25 Golduck, and the specificity of that requirement is what turns a standard 1-in-8,192 base shiny chance into something approaching a statistical nightmare.

Golduck can appear in the Hoenn Safari Zone at levels ranging from 25 to 40. The level 25 variant sits in a 1% encounter slot, meaning the vast majority of Golduck encounters will be the wrong level entirely. Stack that 1% encounter probability on top of the base shiny odds of 1 in 8,192, and the compounding math starts to explain how Rex arrived at his 1-in-9-million figure.

The level restriction is not arbitrary. Rex has a specific goal in mind that requires the weakest available Golduck, making every higher-level encounter a wasted roll regardless of whether it sparkles.

The Safari Zone problem nobody wants to think about

What most players miss when they hear "1-in-9-million shiny hunt" is the secondary terror hiding behind those odds. This hunt is taking place in the Safari Zone.

The Safari Zone is one of the only locations in the main-series Pokemon games where wild Pokemon can flee from battle on their own terms. Unlike a standard encounter where you control the pace, Safari Zone Pokemon can simply leave. If a shiny level 25 Golduck finally appears after millions of resets across 58 consoles, Rex has no guarantee it stays long enough to throw a Safari Ball.

This is part of Safari Week, an annual community event in the shiny hunting world where players intentionally take on hunts in these high-stakes zones. The event produces some of the most dramatic outcomes in the hobby, with players celebrating catches that required both astronomical luck and real-time nerve. The flip side is equally documented: shinies that appear and immediately flee, taking months of work with them.

important
In the Safari Zone, wild Pokemon can flee at any time regardless of your actions. Even a confirmed shiny encounter carries a real risk of ending in loss, which is a core part of the Safari Week challenge.

What 58 consoles actually changes

Running 58 simultaneous game instances does not improve the per-encounter odds. A shiny Golduck at level 25 is still a 1-in-9-million proposition on any single console. What the multi-console setup does is compress time. Each reset across all 58 machines counts as a separate attempt, so Rex is effectively running 58 hunts in parallel rather than sequentially.

For context, a solo player soft-resetting once every 30 seconds would need roughly 75,000 hours of continuous play to hit those odds at the expected value. The 58-console approach slashes that theoretical wait time by a factor of 58, bringing it down to something closer to 1,300 hours of active hunting. Still a long road, but a very different proposition.

The key here is that the hardware investment and the logistical complexity of the setup are themselves part of the appeal. Rex is not just hunting a shiny. He is building something the community can watch, react to, and share in.

What this means for the shiny hunting community

Shiny hunting in older Pokemon titles has always had a dedicated following, but setups like Rex's push the hobby into genuinely new territory. The combination of retro hardware, community events like Safari Week, and social media documentation has turned what used to be a solitary grind into a spectator sport.

Pokemon Sapphire, a Game Boy Advance title from 2002, is still generating genuine excitement and viral moments in 2026 because of players willing to engineer setups this elaborate. That longevity says something real about the hold these games have on their audience.

If you are curious about how Psyduck and Golduck fit into the modern Pokemon ecosystem, our guide on how to make a Hot-Spring Shower and get Psyduck in Pokémon Pokopia is worth a read for a very different kind of duck-related Pokemon content. For everything else Rex is attempting, the only thing left to do is watch the setup run and hope that one day soon, all 58 screens flash gold at once.
