Twenty-five years of Animal Crossing. Nintendo marked the milestone by shipping a surprise update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons on April 13, 2026, bumping the game to Version 3.0.2 on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
The headline addition is a commemorative leaf item tied directly to the series' 25th anniversary. According to Nintendo's official social media post, the item lands in your in-game mailbox automatically once the update is installed. It's a small gesture, but the kind of thing the Animal Crossing community tends to hold onto forever.
What the patch actually fixes
Beyond the anniversary freebie, Version 3.0.2 is a focused bug-fix release. Nine issues were addressed in total, and a few of them are genuinely notable for active players.
The crafting exploit stands out. A bug allowed players to complete multi-item crafting jobs using DIY recipes that require six material types, even when they didn't have enough materials in stock. That's now patched. The key here is that this could have been used to generate items that shouldn't exist in a player's inventory, so the fix matters for anyone who cares about keeping their island legitimate.
Hotel guest rooms also got attention. An issue in Happy Home Paradise DLC was causing furniture placement or guest behavior to trap players inside rooms with no way to exit. That's the kind of bug that stops a play session cold, so it's good to see it addressed.
Two rock-related fixes made the list as well. One covers dung beetles clinging to on-screen snowballs after the snowball itself had disappeared, and the other revisits a known item-popping issue where items would fly out of rocks before the shovel animation even made contact. Nintendo had already patched the latter in Version 3.0.1, but confirmed it could still trigger under specific conditions, so it's been fixed again.

danger
You'll want to install the update before loading your island to make sure the anniversary item appears in your mailbox. If it doesn't show up, restarting the game after updating should do it.
A busy day for Animal Crossing fans
The patch wasn't the only anniversary activity from Nintendo. The original Doubutsu no Mori GameCube packaging design, based on the Japanese release, was shared by Nintendo and can be displayed in-game. The original Animal Crossing GameCube soundtrack also landed on the Nintendo Music mobile app on the same day.
This follows a major New Horizons update earlier this year and the release of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. The game clearly isn't being left to idle, even five years after its original launch.
For players who want to stay across everything happening in Nintendo's catalog right now, there's plenty more to read through in the latest gaming news covering Switch 2 updates and beyond.
