Official Aftershock Event Trailer ...

The Aftershock event kicks off March 31

Apex Legends is getting one of its more mechanically interesting midseason drops in a while. The Aftershock Event runs from March 31 to April 21, and it's not just a cosmetic store refresh. There's a new universal ability baked into Wildcard, a brand-new Elite weapon, meaningful legend reworks, and a Reward Shop with two rotating item sets. A lot is happening at once.

The headline mechanic is the Vortex Shield, which every legend gets access to in the Wildcard: Charged Up mode on Broken Moon. You raise it to absorb incoming bullets, then release to fire them back. The catch: it runs on energy, and you recharge it by collecting EVO or using specific Wild Cards. Miss your window and you're standing there holding nothing while someone rushes you. That tension between absorbing fire and knowing when to release is what makes it interesting on paper.

Paired with the Vortex Shield is the EMP Blast, a stun that also damages placeable objects. Recharging the EMP Battery ties directly into how aggressively you play the shield, which creates a feedback loop that should reward players who stay active rather than turtling.

Nine new Wild Cards and what they actually do

Respawn has added 9 new Wild Cards specifically for the Charged Up variant, and the list covers a lot of ground. Some are defensive, some are aggressive, and a couple are just weird in the best way:

  • Bigger and Better: Increases Vortex Shield size, speeds up deploy and stow
  • Duck and Cover: Larger shield area but disables return fire
  • Energy Efficient: EMP Blast costs 50% energy, giving you two uses per charge
  • Sonic Boom: Upgrades EMP Blast damage and adds knockback
  • Static Charge: EMP Battery stays fully charged even after use
  • Extra Juice: Reviving a teammate grants EMP Battery charge
  • Background Process: Passive EMP Battery charging that increases while sprinting
  • Kinetic Converter: Movement speed scales with EMP Battery charge percentage
  • Heat Signature: Spend EMP Battery charge to highlight enemies through walls

What surprised me most looking at this list is how many of them push you toward different playstyles. Kinetic Converter rewards staying charged up and moving fast. Duck and Cover turns you into a pure damage sponge. Heat Signature is basically a pay-to-scan ability that costs battery rather than a cooldown. There's genuine variety here.

Gibraltar finally gets some help, Wraith gets faster, Wattson gets nastier

The legend updates are arguably the more lasting part of this patch since they carry into all modes, not just the event.

Gibraltar has been sitting at the bottom of pick rate charts for a while, and Respawn acknowledged it directly in the dev notes. The changes are substantial. He gets a new passive called Momentum Boost that triggers a speed increase after maintaining sprint speed for a few seconds (only active while unarmed or with weapons that don't restrict sprint). His Dome of Protection cooldown drops from 17 seconds to 13 seconds. His ultimate now has a 20% larger radius baked in by default, calls in missiles faster, and can be thrown before the equip animation finishes.

The new upgrade options are where it gets interesting. Thunder Dome electrifies the dome on placement, dealing 50 damage and slowing the first enemy to enter. Triple Bombardment splits his ultimate into 3 smaller charges with reduced radius and missile count each. That second one especially changes how you think about his ult in a fight.

Wraith gets two straightforward but meaningful changes: her tactical cooldown drops from 20 seconds to 15, and her portal cooldown goes from 2.5 minutes to 1.5 minutes. Both were integrated from upgrade slots into her base kit. The new Phase Dome upgrade creates a 30-second void zone when she starts channeling her portal, which is a significant team utility option. Phase Jumper extends void duration from 4 to 6 seconds and adds a double jump while phased.

Wattson gets fence damage bumped from 20 to 35, deployment time cut from 1 second to 0.5 seconds, and a new interaction where placing a fence in front of a Hardlight mesh will reinforce it. Her pylon now also reinforces Hardlight meshes in its zone. The deeper you look at these changes, the more they're specifically designed to make her a better defender of fortified positions.

The Elite Hemlok is a different kind of AR

The Hemlok Breach AR is the new Elite Weapon for Split 2, and it's a full redesign of the Hemlok's identity. Burst and single-fire modes are gone. What you get instead:

The Breach Charge mode is the standout feature. It's a single explosive shot on a 15-second cooldown that deals significant bonus damage to Hardlight and structures. In a meta where Hardlight fortifications matter, having a weapon that specifically counters them is a real consideration. The integrated silencer on the auto mode is a nice touch too, keeping your position quieter while you're putting out consistent damage.

Cosmetics, Reward Shop, and what's available when

The Reward Shop runs two separate rotations. From March 31 to April 10, you can grab an Aftershock Pack, an Epic Lifeline Legend Skin, a Tracker Set, and more. The second rotation from April 10 to April 21 swaps in an Epic Lifeline Banner Frame alongside another Aftershock Pack.

Event Legend Skins are available for Wattson, Ash, Pathfinder, Horizon, Crypto, and Gibraltar, priced at 1,800 Apex Coins or 2,400 crafting materials each. Fuse gets a Prestige Skin with a custom Finisher and Dive Trail. Weapon skins include the EVA-8
