Ball x Pit Reveals The Regal Update

Ball x Pit has received its first major free content update on PlayStation 5 with the release of The Regal Update. Available now for all PS5 owners, the update adds new characters, a variety of balls and passives, and introduces an Endless Mode, offering players additional ways to engage with the game. This marks the first of three free updates scheduled for 2026.

Developed by Kenny Sun & Friends, Ball x Pit combines roguelike progression, physics-driven ball combat, and base-building mechanics. The Regal Update builds on the game’s established systems while adding new options for strategy and experimentation.

How Ball x Pit Developed Into a Unique Experience

The origins of Ball x Pit date back to late 2021 when lead developer Kenny Sun drew inspiration from a mobile game called Punball. While the early prototype was turn-based, where balls bounced against enemies before they advanced, a transition to real-time combat in early 2022 transformed the game into the action-oriented experience players know today.

Key to Ball x Pit’s design are its fusion and evolution systems. Each ball in the game has three categories of abilities: status effects, area-of-effect attacks, and unique traits. Players can combine balls to create synergies that enhance damage, effects, or utility. Certain sets of balls can also evolve into entirely new balls, which in turn can be fused again for even greater flexibility. The game also integrates base-building mechanics where structures function as part of the battlefield. Characters can interact with these buildings to upgrade them, tying long-term progression into the main gameplay loop rather than relying on traditional menus.

Introducing New Playable Characters

The Regal Update adds two unlockable characters. The Falconer uses a pair of birds to launch balls in wide, sweeping arcs across the screen, creating new possibilities for covering space and managing enemy waves. The Carouser, a medieval-inspired character, manipulates the trajectory of balls using a personal gravity field, allowing shots to curve unpredictably. Both characters offer distinct playstyles and encourage experimentation with the game’s fusion and evolution mechanics.

Expanded Arsenal: Balls and Passive Upgrades

Alongside new characters, the update introduces eight new balls that provide players with additional options for combat. Some of these include a shorter but stronger burn effect, explosive balls that scatter in multiple directions, and high-impact balls that degrade over time. The update also includes three new passives that interact with both the battlefield and equipped balls. One passive increases critical hit potential and can instantly eliminate standard enemies, another triggers random ball effects, and the third scales special ball damage based on the number of smaller balls in play. Together, these additions expand the number of viable strategies and encourage deeper experimentation with different builds.

Endless Mode: Extending the Challenge

Endless Mode is one of the most requested features from the Ball x Pit community. This mode unlocks after completing the main game and removes the standard level limits. Players can continue progressing past bosses as long as they survive, with difficulty scaling over time. Endless Mode emphasizes endurance, strategy, and optimization, providing a testing ground for the most advanced ball and fusion combinations. This mode does not have a defined endpoint, offering an open-ended way to engage with the game beyond its standard campaign.

Free Updates as Part of Long-Term Support

The Regal Update is the first of three free updates planned for 2026. The developers have confirmed that future updates will continue to expand characters, balls, and game mechanics without additional cost, maintaining long-term engagement and building on the foundation established by the initial release.

Ball x Pit: The Regal Update is now available for download on PlayStation 5 and is free for all current owners of the game.
