The JRPG genre is not having a quiet year. While 2026 may not have the sheer volume of heavyweights that 2024 or 2025 delivered, the titles that are confirmed or strongly expected to land before December make a compelling case for clearing your schedule.
Here's the lowdown on the titles worth tracking right now.
Nihon Falcom is carrying the year on its back
Nihon Falcom has two entries on any serious 2026 JRPG watchlist, which is either impressive or slightly alarming depending on your backlog situation.
The bigger one is Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter. After Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter landed last year as one of the best JRPGs of the year, Falcom quickly announced the follow-up, which picks up literally one day after the first game ends. The Trails series has been running since 2004 and carries a single continuous narrative across every entry, so the 1st Chapter remake was specifically designed to give new players a clean entry point. If you played it, you already know why the 2nd Chapter is the most anticipated JRPG on this list.
Kyoto Xanadu, the sequel to Tokyo Xanadu, is the other Falcom release to watch. A July 16 release date is confirmed for Japan and Asia, mixing 2D sidescroller traversal with full 3D environments and a progression system called the Soul-Device that teaches protagonist Rei Kamiya new attack skills. Given Falcom's recent push toward simultaneous global releases, a Western launch in 2026 is plausible, though not confirmed.
Team Asano steps into action RPG territory
Team Asano, the internal Square Enix team behind the HD-2D engine, is releasing its first action RPG in that visual style. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales arrives June 18 on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The game draws clear inspiration from classic Zelda structure, fields and dungeons, puzzle-solving, giant bosses, but layers in more RPG depth through a magicite collection system for character customization. Protagonist Elliot travels with fairy companion Faie. Team Asano has not released a bad game under that banner, which makes this one of the safest bets on the list.
info
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is one of the few 2026 JRPGs with a confirmed release date. Most others are listed as "2026" windows without specific launch days.
The indie tier is genuinely exciting
Alabaster Dawn, from Radical Fish Games (the studio behind CrossCode), is heading into Early Access on May 7 following its Triple-I Initiative announcement. Built on the same engine as CrossCode, the 2.5D action RPG draws from Devil May Cry and Kingdom Hearts while following protagonist Juno through a destroyed world. A demo is already live on Steam if you want to try it before committing.
SacriFire, from Pixelated Milk, is the other indie that deserves serious attention. The game features a Vagrant Story and Valkyrie Profile-inspired setup, a soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba, and a world where gods and demons are actively tearing things apart around protagonist Ezekiel. It was originally targeting Q1 2026 on Steam but got delayed after securing a new publishing partner, likely to support a simultaneous multi-platform release. The delay is frustrating, but the upside is broader availability.
The bigger names rounding out the slate
Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is the headline Nintendo JRPG for the year, developed by Intelligent Systems and exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Players participate in gladiatorial battles called the Heroic Games under the rule of the Divine Sovereign. No release date is confirmed, but Nintendo has a strong track record of hitting announced windows. Expect the date to surface in a future Nintendo Direct.
Another Eden Begins is the premium single-player adaptation of the mobile gacha title Another Eden, written by Masato Kato, the writer behind Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and portions of Xenogears. The shift from gacha to a standalone premium game with 18 party members, strategic turn-based battles, and a New Game+ system built around multiple endings is arriving September 16 on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC. The precedent set by Octopath Traveler 0 makes this conversion worth taking seriously.
Echoes of Aincrad, published by Bandai Namco, lands July 10 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Sword Art Online spin-off lets players create a custom character and tackle the floors of Aincrad without being locked into Kirito's story. Producer Yosuke Futami confirmed the narrative is designed to be accessible to newcomers. Kirito does appear, but the game is not built around him.
Finally, Brigandine Abyss brings back the tactical RPG series with a new developer, Adglobe (the team behind ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights), published by NIS America. The game spans six factions across the continent of Meltitea, mixing kingdom management with tactical combat. No release date yet beyond a 2026 window.
With Alabaster Dawn's Early Access starting May 7 and Elliot arriving June 18, the first half of the year has concrete dates to plan around.
