US-based payments company Bolt has partnered with a16z-backed merchant of record platform Toffee to expand direct-to-consumer (D2C) payment services for game studios and app developers. The collaboration is expected to cover over $300 million in signed processing commitments and is aimed at easing the complexities of in-app payment management.

The partnership will allow Bolt to refer developers to Toffee for merchant of record services. This means studios can rely on a single partner to handle tax collection and remittance, local payment methods, fraud prevention, and global settlement. By consolidating these services, the companies aim to reduce administrative burdens for developers and streamline the payment process for digital goods.

Experience in In-App Payments Drives the Partnership

Toffee has been active in the in-app payment space for more than two-and-a-half years, processing transactions before major platforms opened to alternative providers in 2024. Kyle Sye, Bolt’s head of games, emphasized the value of this experience.
