Borderlands 4 Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie ...

Borderlands 4just dropped its first story DLC, and if you bought it expecting to dive straight in, you might have found yourself staring at the base game with no obvious door to knock on. Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned is now live, and it brings a new zone, a new playable character, fresh quests, and a fresh wave of loot to chase. The official announcement from 2K and Gearbox confirmed the game would keep expanding post-launch, and this is the first real proof of that promise.

Two ways in, depending on your save

Here's the thing: the entry point differs depending on whether you're loading an existing character or starting fresh. Gearbox has built in both options, which is a smart move given how many players are likely at very different stages of the base game.

For existing characters, there's a prerequisite. You'll need to have completed "A Lot of Process," the fourth main story mission, before the DLC content becomes accessible. If you're past that point, you're good to go. The recommended level is 13, so characters who've been grinding since launch should be more than ready.

Players who want to jump straight into the DLC without touching the main campaign have that option too. Starting a new game and selecting the "Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned" option creates a level 13 character with 12 skill points pre-allocated, four weapons, a grenade, and a repkit. It's a functional loadout for getting through the opening stretch, though you'll be missing the context that the main campaign provides.

Finding the door: Zadra's Backup Plan

Once your character qualifies, the DLC entry point sits in the Dissected Plateau area. Head to Zadra's Backup Plan and look for the alien pillar inside. Interacting with it triggers the opening cutscene, where Moxxi receives a mysterious letter. Classic Borderlands energy.

After the cutscene, you'll be transported to the Whispering Glacier, the new zone added with this DLC. The quest "On Icebound Shores Abandoned" kicks off immediately on arrival, which is the proper start of the Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned story. The entry quest that gets you there is called "An Invitation," so if you're scanning your quest log, that's the one to look for first.

What's actually new in the Whispering Glacier

The Whispering Glacier is a full new zone, not a reskinned corner of an existing map. Along with the new environment, the DLC introduces a new C4SH character (a new Vault Hunter), additional story missions, new enemy types, and naturally, new weapons to add to the loot pool. For a game built around the loop of shooting and looting, more guns in the pool is always the headline.

This is BL4's first story pack, which means Gearbox is establishing the template for how post-launch content will work in Borderlands 4. The dual entry system (existing character or fresh level 13 start) suggests the studio wants the DLC to be accessible without forcing players to replay hours of content just to reach it.
