Bungie's Marathon Extraction Shooter: Full Review Breakdown

Bungie has officially revived its dormant Marathon franchise, launching the sci-fi extraction shooter on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S after a 30-year absence from gaming. The studio ran a pre-release "server slam" from February 26 to March 2, giving players a structured look at the game before its first full season kicks off.

What Marathon Actually Is

For those unfamiliar with the genre, Marathon is an extraction shooter, a multiplayer format that has gained significant traction through titles like Escape from Tarkov and Arc Raiders. Players drop onto a map in teams of three, scavenge for weapons and gear, complete faction contracts, deal with hostile AI enemies, and attempt to exfiltrate alive.

The key here is the risk-reward tension at the heart of every run: bring your best gear for an edge, or go in light and hope to outmaneuver a better-equipped squad. Die, and you lose everything you carried in.

Set on Tau Ceti IV, a derelict colony fought over by competing factions, players take on the role of "runners," biosynthetic mercenaries hired to do dirty work across the planet's surface. Each runner shell functions as a distinct class with unique abilities, encouraging teams to build complementary loadouts.

Server Slam Impressions

After 10 hours of play across the server slam period, a few clear strengths and weaknesses emerged.

What works:

  • Visuals are a standout, with vibrant fluorescent environments that contrast sharply against the desolate colony setting
  • Core gunplay carries Bungie's signature feel, crisp and satisfying across all weapon classes
  • Faction lore adds meaningful context, giving players a reason to care about the contracts they're running
  • Sound design is polished, with understated music and punchy weapon audio
  • Runner abilities encourage cooperative play in ways that reward coordinated teams

What needs work:

  • The UI is visually dense and prioritizes style over clarity, making onboarding a genuine challenge
  • Time-to-kill against AI enemies feels inconsistent compared to player-versus-player encounters
  • The lack of in-game guidance means players must actively parse menus covering runner shells, factions, contracts, upgrades, and loot simultaneously
  • No free-to-play option at launch, with the game priced at $39.99
danger
Bungie acknowledged PC performance issues at the close of the server slam. Players on higher-end rigs reported smooth performance, but those on mid-range hardware should monitor official channels for optimization updates before purchasing.

The Live Service Question

Here's the thing: Marathon arrives in a market littered with cautionary tales. For every Fortnite or Apex Legends, there are multiple live service titles that shut down within months of launch. Bungie is no stranger to the pressure, given Destiny 2's ongoing but complicated trajectory and the broader PlayStation ecosystem still recovering from the rapid failure of Concord.

What most players miss is that Marathon is not positioned as a free-to-play title, which raises the stakes considerably. At $39.99, the game needs to retain its player base long enough to justify the investment, both for buyers and for Bungie's continued support.

Additional maps and a ranked mode are scheduled to arrive in the back half of March as part of Marathon's first season across all platforms.

A Franchise Resurrected

The original Marathon trilogy, developed by Bungie in the 1990s, was a foundational first-person shooter series for Mac platforms before the studio moved on to create Halo. The new Marathon shares only its sci-fi roots and name with those predecessors, built from the ground up as a modern multiplayer experience.

The relaunch did face some turbulence during its pre-release marketing period, when a plagiarism controversy emerged over artwork similarities. Bungie subsequently settled with the artist involved before the server slam began.
