34BigThings, known for its work on the futuristic racing series Redout, took over the Carmageddon license after being acquired by Embracer Group in 2020. The studio viewed the project as both a professional and personal milestone, as some of its founders were inspired to enter game development because of the original Carmageddon series.

The studio initially considered creating a traditional, open-ended racing game but felt this approach would not differentiate the new entry from its predecessors. Instead, they opted to integrate roguelite elements, allowing for randomized challenges, progression systems, and vehicle upgrades. This decision shapes every aspect of Rogue Shift, from track design to enemy behavior, providing a gameplay experience that rewards experimentation and persistence.

Racing Through a Post-Apocalyptic World

Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is set in the year 2050 on a post-apocalyptic Earth. Players compete in a cross-country death race toward a spaceport, with the goal of escaping the ruined planet. The game features handcrafted courses, but players can choose multiple paths through each stage, creating variety and encouraging replayability.

The studio emphasized speed and physicality, carrying over lessons from Redout. Surface materials affect vehicle handling, making terrain choices meaningful. Mud, grass, sand, and asphalt all influence cornering and traction, adding depth to the driving experience. The sense of momentum and collision impact is influenced by classic combat racers like Blur and Split/Second, blending high-speed racing with strategic destruction.

Evolving Hazards and Combat

The game replaces pedestrians from earlier entries with Wasted, undead creatures that act as both obstacles and tactical elements. Standard Wasted can be knocked down to build speed boosts, while dangerous Wasted fight back with explosive attacks, projectiles, or disruptive abilities. Rival racers with mounted weapons and the police-like Enforcers add further challenges, ensuring players remain engaged even when they are leading the race.

Boss encounters are another significant change. Each area has a vehicular boss that requires players to either destroy, outrun, or survive against it under time constraints. This introduces an additional layer of strategy and pacing, blending racing mechanics with encounter-based challenges.

Roguelite Progression and Customization

Roguelite progression underpins Rogue Shift. Players who fail to reach the spaceport during a run unlock new perks, weapons, and vehicles that enhance subsequent attempts. Perks can improve racing speed, combat effectiveness, or the ability to eliminate Wasted more efficiently, and stacking similar upgrades produces stronger effects.

Weapon variety also plays a key role. The game features 13 weapon classes, including mounted shotguns and railguns, most of which are new to the series. One returning weapon, though renamed, offers a nod to longtime fans. Vehicles also have distinct characteristics, from fast but slippery cars to more stable models with automatic weaponry, allowing players to experiment with different strategies and builds.

34BigThings deliberately embraced powerful upgrade combinations that can dramatically shift gameplay. Certain perks multiply projectile output, while others enhance damage per shot, encouraging players to find inventive synergies.
