Black Ops Royale: A Tactical Tour of Avalon

Treyarch and Activision have officially announced Black Ops Royale, a new battle-royale mode coming to Call of Duty: Warzone that draws direct inspiration from Black Ops 4's fan-favorite Blackout mode. The new mode drops on March 13 and shakes up the standard Warzone formula in some meaningful ways, particularly around how players acquire and build out their weapons.

What Black Ops Royale Actually Is

Black Ops Royale pits 100 players across 25 squads on the massive Avalon map, a location that first appeared as the large-scale Endgame map in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. For its Warzone debut, Treyarch reworked Avalon by reducing its dependence on water sections and adding new connections between its islands to better support battle-royale flow.

Here's the thing: this mode strips away several staples of modern Warzone. There are no pre-built loadouts, no Gulag, and no buy stations. Players wingsuit in empty-handed and must scavenge everything from the ground up.

How the Weapon and Upgrade System Works

What most players will need to wrap their heads around is the weapon rarity system, which sits at the core of Black Ops Royale's progression loop. Weapons found in the world come with fixed archetypes and five-attachment upgrade paths. As players locate and equip attachment kits scattered across Avalon, the weapon's rarity tier increases, unlocking preset builds along the way.

The rarity ladder runs from base-level finds all the way up to Legendary, and reaching that top tier means your weapon is fully unlocked with its complete attachment build active. The key here is prioritizing attachment kits for your chosen weapon archetype rather than swapping between different guns constantly.

Players can also combine weapon archetypes with class benefits and build themes to push their firepower further. The HUD sticks close to Warzone's existing UI but adds new information layers, including:

  • Enemy health readouts
  • Weapon rarity and archetype indicators
  • Active attachment upgrade paths
  • Perk status and availability

Gear, Perks, and Side Objectives

Beyond weapons, Black Ops Royale brings back Blackout-era equipment. Players will find grappling hooks, sensor darts, and trauma kits in the field, alongside Killstreaks and a tiered armor vest system that rewards players who survive longer engagements.

The Perk system also returns in a new form. Rather than fixed perk slots, players carry five consumable boosts that can be swapped and activated on the fly. Each boost provides a temporary advantage designed to be popped at critical moments, whether that's during a firefight or while pushing a stronghold.

Optional side activities scattered across Avalon give squads a reason to move beyond just surviving:

  • Bounty hunts targeting specific enemy players
  • Strongboxes that reward players who crack them open
  • Relay captures for map control benefits
  • Guild defenses offering combat-based rewards

Completing these activities yields armor, UAV sweeps, and other on-the-fly loadout upgrades that can swing the momentum of a match.

The Blackout Connection

According to Game Informer, the official announcement blog described the mode this way: "There are clear influences from the core Blackout experience, like bullet drop and weapon handling, as well as the armor system and use of the Trauma Kit, capturing the Blackout pacing, traversal, and combat feel in a modern way. This isn't a remake; it's a unique experience that pays homage to the Blackout core gameplay while keeping the flow of a match feeling right for Call of Duty: Warzone players."

Players eager for more Call of Duty news can also expect a full Season 2 Reloaded roadmap for Black Ops 7 to drop on March 4.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When does Black Ops Royale launch in Warzone?

Black Ops Royale launches on March 13 as part of Call of Duty: Warzone.

How do you get better weapons in Black Ops Royale?

Weapons are scavenged from the map rather than brought in via loadouts. You upgrade them by finding and equipping attachment kits, which raise the weapon's rarity tier through five levels up to Legendary.

Is there a Gulag in Black Ops Royale?

No. Black Ops Royale removes the Gulag entirely, along with buy stations and pre-built loadouts. Once you're eliminated, you're out of the match.

What map does Black Ops Royale use?

The mode takes place on Avalon, a large-scale map originally from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 that Treyarch modified specifically for battle-royale play by reducing water areas and adding new island connections.
