The sanctum puzzles scattered across Hernand in Crimson Desert have been generating a steady stream of confused players since launch, and the Sanctum of Temperance near Unicorn Cliff is no exception. The good news? Once you understand the setup, it clicks into place pretty fast.
The unlock wall most players hit first
Here's the thing that stops a lot of players cold before they even get to the actual puzzle. The Sanctum of Temperance won't let you interact with it until you've unlocked the Witch faction questline in Chapter 3's main story. Walk up to it too early and you'll just get a message telling you to "meet a certain someone" first.
Those Witch vendors are the key here. They let you slot Abyss Gears, but more relevantly for exploration, they also open up every sanctum puzzle across Hernand. Before that unlock, these locations are just decorative. After it, they're fully interactive puzzles with real rewards.

You must progress to Chapter 3 and unlock the Witch faction questline before the Sanctum of Temperance becomes interactive. Approaching it earlier just gives you a locked-out message.
What the puzzle actually involves
The Sanctum of Temperance follows a similar structure to the Sanctum of Benediction in the same region. The core loop: clear the enemies first, then deal with the environmental puzzle around the central pot-like device.
Clearing enemies isn't optional. The puzzle mechanics won't cooperate until the area is clean.
Once that's handled, the sequence runs like this:
- From the central device, head right to find a vine-covered building door. Use Blinding Flash to burn the vines away.
- Inside, grab the core using Axiom Force and carry it back to the central pot.
- Place the core on top of the left pillar. Precision doesn't matter much here.
- Climb on top of the core and perform a jumping Force Palm to slot it properly into position.
- Turn around, jump over the wall with the pipe, and take the stairs down to find a floating battery cube.
- Grab the battery cube with Axiom Force, bring it back upstairs, and place it in the slot on the left side of the central device.
- Use Force Palm again to slam it into place.
After that, wait a short while for the device to power up. The puzzle completes, and Elowen appears for a brief cutscene.
How this fits into Hernand's broader puzzle design
What most players miss is that the sanctum puzzles in Hernand aren't isolated curiosities. They're tied directly into the Witch faction progression, which means completing them in sequence matters for the overall questline. The Sanctum of Temperance sits alongside puzzles like the Sanctum of Benediction, the Trembling Woods, and the Arboria Castle puzzle as part of a wider set of environmental challenges Pearl Abyss has built into the region.
The design pattern across these puzzles is consistent: clear enemies, use Axiom Force to manipulate objects, and trigger the completion condition. The variation comes from the specific object placement and which abilities you need to apply where. The Sanctum of Temperance leans on Blinding Flash for the vine-clearing step, which is easy to miss if you're trying to brute-force the door.
Pro tip: if you haven't yet unlocked Blinding Flash, sort that out before heading to this sanctum. The vine-covered door is a hard blocker without it.
