Dead by Daylight Stranger Things Chapter 2

On January 27, Behaviour Interactive released the Stranger Things Chapter 2 DLC for Dead by Daylight, bringing fresh content from the Netflix series into the multiplayer horror game. The update introduces Vecna, referred to in-game as The First, who is portrayed as the first test subject at Hawkins Lab. Alongside Vecna, the DLC adds two new survivors, Dustin Henderson and Jane “Eleven” Hopper, featuring their 1987 appearances from season five, as well as new Legendary Outfits for Eddie Munson and Robin Buckley.

While the new survivors and outfits expand customization, Vecna is the central addition. Although slower than most killers in Dead by Daylight, Vecna’s abilities focus on range and area control, making him a formidable opponent when used strategically. Understanding his toolkit is essential for both new and experienced players.

Understanding Vecna’s Ranged and Area Abilities

Vecna’s primary offensive tool is Vine Attack, which allows him to summon red, pulsating vines from the Upside Down. Players can freely aim this ability, and its low cooldown makes repeated attacks possible even if an initial shot misses. Hitting survivors applies one Worldbreaker token, an important mechanic for unlocking Vecna’s full potential.

The second ability lets Vecna move through the Upside Down, allowing him to bypass obstacles like pallets, windows, and breakable doors. When emerging from this traversal, he triggers the Undergate attack, an area-of-effect skill that damages all survivors caught within range and applies two Worldbreaker tokens. While powerful against grouped or trapped survivors, Undergate has a long cooldown, making it most effective when combined with Vine Attack to maximize token stacking.

Once a survivor accumulates two or more Worldbreaker tokens, Vecna enters Worldbreaker mode. During this state, both Vine Attack and Undergate can inflict damage, and a visible timer alerts players to the mode’s duration. Survivors can reduce the timer by interacting with grandfather clocks scattered across the map, limiting Vecna’s window of increased threat.

Mori Attacks and Loadout Strategies

Vecna has two mori attacks, special one-hit kills available under certain conditions. The first, requiring a Memento Mori Offering in the loadout, allows Vecna to levitate a downed survivor and inflict fatal damage, echoing the violence portrayed in Stranger Things season four. The second, called Mind Break, triggers only when a survivor has been hooked twice, possesses four Worldbreaker tokens, and is downed by either Vine Attack or Undergate. This attack has Vecna twisting the survivor’s neck in a controlled finishing move, offering a high-reward tactic for those who can set it up.

These moris, along with the core abilities, emphasize Vecna’s playstyle as a strategic killer who excels at punishing survivors who fail to manage Worldbreaker tokens effectively.

Strategies for Playing Vecna

Vecna’s gameplay relies on anticipating survivor movement and using ranged attacks to apply consistent pressure. Vine Attack can hit targets through walls, allowing players to control space even when direct line-of-sight is blocked. Learning map layouts is crucial for predicting survivor paths and improving attack accuracy.

Vine Attack can also manipulate survivors’ movements during chases. Launching the attack slightly ahead of fleeing survivors can force them to change direction, creating opportunities for melee strikes. While moving through the Upside Down, Vecna must account for objects he cannot pass through, including walls, generators, bushes, and fences. Survivors can exploit these limitations to evade him, but careful planning of Undergate timing ensures that even mobile targets remain vulnerable.

Survivor Tactics Against Vecna

Survivors have several methods to counter Vecna’s abilities. Breaking line-of-sight and using unpredictable routes can reduce the effectiveness of Vine Attack. When pursuing survivors in open areas, players can anticipate the attack’s trajectory and adjust movement accordingly.

Dustin’s Bada Bada Boom perk allows survivors to temporarily booby-trap windows after repairing generators, slowing Vecna down during chases. Interacting with grandfather clocks also reduces Worldbreaker time, preventing Vecna from building momentum for multiple hooks or mori attacks. Understanding these mechanics is key for balancing encounters and surviving longer against The First.

Expanding the Stranger Things Universe in Dead by Daylight

Stranger Things Chapter 2 builds on Dead by Daylight’s ongoing collaboration with Netflix. The original Stranger Things DLC introduced the Demogorgon as a killer, Nancy and Steve Harrington as survivors, and the Hawkins Labs map. The latest update allows players to field a full roster of characters from the show and create unique matchups with Vecna or other killers.

This is not the first version of Vecna in Dead by Daylight. In 2024, Behaviour Interactive partnered with Wizards of the Coast to introduce The Lich, inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons villain that inspired Stranger Things’ version of Vecna. These updates reflect the game’s continued effort to blend pop culture horror with multiplayer gameplay, maintaining relevance over multiple years. Players can access the full experience, including both Stranger Things DLCs, through the Dead by Daylight: Stranger Things Complete Edition on the Epic Games Store.
