Discord Enhances Social SDK with Native Mobile Linking

Discord has rolled out an update to its Social SDK, introducing fully native mobile linking for iOS and Android. The update allows players to link their Discord accounts to in-game profiles directly from the app, making it easier for friends to connect and coordinate gameplay. Previously, linking accounts required integration through a game studio, but the new system enables users to complete the process within Discord itself.

The update also includes new activity categories. Instead of only showing that a player is in-game, Discord now displays whether a user is competing, watching, or listening. This feature provides friends with more context on how someone is engaging with a game, supporting better social interaction and coordination.

Linked Players Show Higher Engagement

Discord shared early metrics from integration partners, noting that players with linked accounts spend 16% more time in-game and have a median 25% increase in active game days compared to non-linked players. The company highlights the impact of social connections on player retention, with the presence of even a single friend significantly increasing playtime and multiple friends contributing to even higher engagement.

CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy emphasized the role of friends in keeping players active. According to Discord, users in voice channels tend to play games on 66% more days, and seeing friends’ activity directly in the app lowers coordination barriers, making multiplayer sessions easier to initiate.

Expanded Gifting Features

In addition to linking and activity tracking, Discord has extended its native gifting system. Previously limited to certain games, the update now allows players to send in-game items to friends across a wider selection of titles without leaving Discord. The company notes that gifting can encourage players to return to games they may have stopped playing, further strengthening the connection between social interaction and gameplay.

While the current list of partner studios remains limited, Discord continues to invite developers interested in integrating the updated Social SDK. The platform positions these updates as a way to reduce friction between play and social features, creating a more seamless experience for both players and developers.
