Disney Eyes Epic Games Acquisition, But It's Far From a Done Deal

Disney and Epic Games to Create ...

"I know for a fact there are senior executives in Disney who want them to buy Epic and are just waiting for that moment." That's tech reporter Alex Heath from The Verge, speaking on the The Town with Matt Belloni podcast on March 25. It's a line that cuts straight to the point, and it's already got the gaming world talking.

Here's the thing, though: Heath immediately followed that up by noting there are people near the top of Disney "who think it's a bad idea." So this isn't a leak about an imminent deal. It's a window into a real internal debate happening inside one of the world's biggest entertainment companies, and it concerns one of gaming's most influential studios, the maker of Fortnite.

How Epic got here

Epic Games has had a genuinely rough stretch. Fortnite player numbers dropped noticeably across 2025, and the company admitted it was "spending significantly more than we're making" before cutting over 1,000 jobs. That's not a minor correction, that's a company under serious financial pressure despite generating over $6 billion in revenue last year. The math clearly wasn't adding up.

The layoffs hit hard enough that Epic CEO Tim Sweeney had to publicly apologize after it emerged a laid-off worker with terminal brain cancer had their life insurance situation mishandled in the process. Fortnite developers themselves warned the cuts would have a "huge impact on development for the rest of the year and likely beyond." The studio that built one of the most-played games on the planet is now navigating some very turbulent water.

Disney's existing stake and the people pushing for more

Disney isn't exactly a stranger to Epic. The company put $1.5 billion into Epic back in 2024, with the stated goal of building a Disney-led mode inside Fortnite, described at the time as a kind of "virtual Disneyland" and a major gaming platform for the company. That investment gave Disney real skin in the game.

Sweeney himself has praised the "speed" of the Epic-Disney collaboration, which is notable given how openly he's fought other corporate giants like Apple and Google. The relationship, at least publicly, looks functional.

The push for a full acquisition has a name attached to it too. Kevin Mayer, former Disney executive and current co-CEO at Candle Media, told CNBC in March that "Epic or some other video game asset would be a great addition to The Walt Disney Company's asset base." He made those comments in the context of new Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro taking the helm. D'Amaro, according to IGN's reporting, was among those who strongly backed the original Fortnite investment. That's not a coincidence worth ignoring.

Why this isn't straightforward

The key here is that Epic isn't publicly traded. As Heath reminded his podcast audience, it's a founder-controlled company, which means Tim Sweeney holds the deciding vote on any sale. Sweeney has spent years positioning Epic as an independent counterweight to platform giants. Selling to Disney would represent a complete reversal of that identity.

There's also the internal Disney divide to consider. Heath's framing was explicit: some senior executives want it, others think it's a bad idea. That kind of split rarely resolves quickly, and with a new CEO still finding his footing, a multi-billion dollar gaming acquisition isn't exactly a low-risk opening move.

What this moment really reflects is how much Fortnite's position has shifted. A year ago, nobody was seriously floating the idea of Epic being acquired. Now, with player retention slipping and the company restructuring at scale, the conversation has changed. Whether Disney ultimately moves or not, the fact that the question is being asked at all says something about where Epic stands right now.
