Fable Reboot Delayed to 2026

The Fable reboot won't arrive until 2026. Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, announced the delay and said the extra development time will let Playground Games properly polish the game. That's a long wait since the project was first revealed in 2020 alongside the Xbox Series X/S consoles, and updates have been sparse in the years since.

Playground Games built its reputation on Forza Horizon, so jumping into an action RPG marks a major shift for the studio. Eidos Montreal is helping out, bringing its experience from the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy. That partnership should shore up gameplay systems like combat, while Playground handles what it does best: detailed open worlds.

Early looks at gameplay

Pre-alpha footage released alongside the delay showed off some of Fable's environments and combat. The clips included horse riding through fields full of flowers and a cave fight with fire magic, showing off the game's lighting and environmental work. Duncan called Albion the "most beautifully realized version" of the world the series has used, combining Playground's visual chops with Fable's established tone.

Trailers have confirmed that Matt 'Super Hans' King from Peep Show will star, which signals the game is leaning into British humour. That approach might be what sets Fable apart in a packed open-world RPG market that already includes The Witcher, Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim, Breath of the Wild, and recent Assassin's Creed games.

Fable's place in the current RPG landscape

Fable 3 came out in 2010. Since then, the action RPG genre has changed completely. Players have dozens of options for big open-world games now, and Fable needs to do something different to stand out. The reboot should keep the series' humour while adding modern gameplay mechanics, combat systems, and environmental detail that match current expectations.

Comparisons with PS5 exclusives like Horizon and God of War are probably inevitable. Fable's tone and storytelling will likely be what makes it memorable, giving it a personality that separates it from other big releases.

What to expect in 2026

Xbox hasn't locked down a specific release date yet. The company plans to host a Developer Direct in January, and Playground Games should be there. Whether the focus lands on Fable or the next Forza Horizon game is unclear, but the event could show more gameplay and maybe narrow down the release window.

Playground's open-world design, Eidos Montreal's support, and Fable's humour-driven storytelling could make this reboot a standout in the modern RPG space, even with stiff competition.
