Fallout: New Vegas for the PS3 mod adds ...

A modder has done something the Mojave never asked for but absolutely deserved: turned the Fallout: New Vegas Greatest Hits PS3 case into a working in-game weapon you can beat people to death with on PC.

From Fallout 3 to the full circle moment

The whole thing started back in October, when Nexus user Pope74220 uploaded a mod for Fallout 3 featuring a meticulously detailed Gamebryo engine replica of the New Vegas Greatest Hits Ultimate Edition box for Sony's PlayStation 3. That's the red-banded Blu-ray version that launched roughly a year after the original release, bundling all the DLC together. The model is absurdly detailed, right down to the back-of-box blurb and the info panels at the bottom. It functions as an unarmed weapon. You can hit people with it.

Then, in January, modder Zhang Yue Zhi took things to their logical conclusion by porting the PS3 box art weapon directly into Fallout: New Vegas for PC, available on the New Vegas Nexus. Here's the thing: the mod doesn't just drop a novelty prop into your inventory. It adds a special bonus tied to the Wild Wasteland perk, giving the disc case a chance to instantly kill any character you connect with. The perk that already turns New Vegas into a parade of absurdist gags now also lets you execute someone with a PlayStation 3 game.

Why the PS3 version carries its own mythology

The PS3 port of New Vegas had a reputation. Running at 720p, struggling to hold 30fps, and somehow managing to be even less stable than the already crash-prone PC and Xbox 360 versions, it was the seventh-generation cross-platform experience at its most punishing. The PS3's Cell Processor was notoriously difficult to develop for, and multiplatform Gamebryo titles felt that pain harder than most.

And yet people played it. People loved it. The fact that the PS3 Greatest Hits re-release, with its distinctive red Blu-ray band, became the entry point for a whole generation of New Vegas fans says more about Obsidian Entertainment's writing and world design than any technical benchmark could.

What makes this mod land is exactly that context. The PS3 Greatest Hits case has a specific je ne sais quoi to it, a kind of lovable underdog energy. Turning it into a weapon you can bonk people with in the PC version, and giving it a Wild Wasteland kill shot, is the kind of joke that only works because the community already understands the lore of that port.

What the mod actually adds

To summarize what's on offer across both versions:

  • Fallout 3 version (by Pope74220): The PS3 Greatest Hits box as an unarmed weapon, highly detailed model with back-of-box text intact
  • New Vegas version (by Zhang Yue Zhi): The same weapon ported into New Vegas for PC, with an added Wild Wasteland perk insta-kill chance

Both mods are free and available through the Nexus. Neither requires anything beyond the base game for their respective titles.

YouTuber Ivan Perdona has a video showing the New Vegas version in action, which is worth watching purely for the spectacle of watching the Courier cave someone's skull in with a PS3 game case in the middle of the Mojave.

The New Vegas modding scene keeps finding new ways to surprise, and with remaster speculation still swirling around Iron Galaxy's recent tease, there has never been a better time to revisit Obsidian's masterpiece, preferably on PC, and preferably armed with a PS3 disc.
