Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Revealed at The Game Awards

Back in December, Casey Hudson, the director behind Mass Effect and the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, announced he was building something new. The studio was called Arcanaut Studios. The game was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. And now, with the team's creative leadership finally public, the picture is becoming a lot clearer , and a lot more exciting for anyone who grew up on BioWare's best work.

A BioWare reunion hiding in plain sight

Arcanaut's website was quietly updated with mini-profiles of the company's key creative leads, and the BioWare connections are hard to miss. Hudson is at the top as CEO and game director, but the names below him paint the full picture.

Ryan Hoyle, the studio's CTO, worked on the original KOTOR and the entire Mass Effect trilogy. Caroline Livingstone, handling production and performance, has credits going back to Neverwinter Nights, then KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. Melanie Faulknor, director of external development, was at BioWare for Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age II, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Senior technical designer Dan Fessenden worked on the original Knights of the Old Republic.

The only leadership member without a BioWare background is Pascal Blanché, who brings experience from Ubisoft, Behaviour Interactive, Wizards of the Coast, and Warner Bros.

That is a lot of people from what fans routinely call BioWare's golden era, all working on the same project.

What this means for players who remember the original era

Here's the thing: the names on this list aren't just resume padding. These are people who were in the room when some of the most beloved RPGs ever made were being built. The Mass Effect trilogy, KOTOR, Dragon Age: Origins , that body of work defined a generation of story-driven games.

For the community around Star Wars: The Old Republic, which has been running since 2011 and still draws a dedicated player base, this announcement carries real weight. SWTOR built its identity directly on the KOTOR legacy, and the idea that the people who helped create that legacy are now working on something new in the same universe is worth paying attention to.

The key here is that the talent isn't just familiar with Star Wars lore. They understand how to build player-driven narratives, how to make companions feel like actual characters, and how to structure RPG choices that land emotionally. That's a specific skill set, and it's concentrated in one place right now.

The timeline and what we still don't know

Arcanaut has confirmed that Fate of the Old Republic is targeting a release before 2030, which is a wide window but at least sets expectations. By the time it ships, it may well be a launch title for next-generation hardware including the PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's Project Helix.

Beyond the team reveal and the broad release target, details on gameplay systems, story direction, and platforms remain scarce. The December announcement gave players the concept and the director's name. This week's update filled in the supporting cast. The actual game is still mostly a mystery.

For players keeping tabs on the Old Republic universe, our gaming news section will have more as Arcanaut reveals further details in the months ahead.
