After nearly four months of Chapter 7 Season 1, one of Fortnite's longest seasons on record, Epic Games finally gave players a proper look at what's coming next. The official Chapter 7 Season 2: Showdown launch trailer dropped on March 18, and it's packed with new weapons, wild mobility items, and a storyline building toward a clash between the Foundation and the Ice King.
The Skyzip Is the Star of the Show
The item getting the most attention is the skyzip device. From what the trailer shows, it launches a balloon with a zipline attached, giving players a fast vertical escape or repositioning option. Think quick rotations and last-second getaways rather than slow, predictable movement. It looks chaotic in the best way possible.
That kind of vertical mobility could shift how late-game circles play out. Players who master it early will have a serious edge in those frantic end-zone moments.
A Rifle That Shoots Rifts
Also spotted in the trailer: the Foundation's Rift Rifle. The weapon appears to fire rifts directly, which could open up some genuinely bizarre counterplay scenarios. Whether it creates traversal rifts, combat rifts, or something entirely new isn't fully spelled out yet, but it fits the Showdown season theme perfectly.
Several other new weapons appear in the trailer as well, though Epic hasn't detailed all of them ahead of the March 19 launch. You'll want to check the Epic Games newsroom once the season goes live for the full breakdown.
Looney Tunes Energy and a Very Stressed Spawn Island Manager
The second trailer Epic released is less about gameplay and more about vibes. It's a live-action comedy short starring Martin Herlily, the SNL writer and Please Don't Destroy member, playing the put-upon manager of Spawn Island. The bit: he's absolutely exhausted by the 15 seconds of chaos every single Fortnite player causes before each match, breaking everything in sight before the round even begins.
It's funny. Genuinely funny. And it signals that Showdown isn't taking itself too seriously despite the big narrative stakes with the Foundation storyline.
Community Mood After a Long Season 1
Here's the thing: the Fortnite community hasn't been in the best headspace heading into this season. Chapter 7 Season 1 ran just under four months, making it one of the longest seasons the game has seen. On top of that, Epic announced a V-Bucks price increase and reduced the amount of V-Bucks earnable through Fortnite Crew and the battle pass, which understandably frustrated a lot of players.
These trailers feel like Epic's attempt to shift the conversation back to the actual game. And honestly, a balloon zipline and a rift-shooting rifle are a pretty good argument for that. Whether the new items are enough to win back goodwill from players burned by the monetization changes remains to be seen, but at minimum, the gameplay looks fresh.
