Fortnite Is Returning to Google Play After Epic Settles Legal Battle

Epic Games and Google have formally ended their multi-year legal battle, with both companies jointly requesting that the US District Court accept a settlement proposal that clears the path for Fortnite to return to Google Play Store worldwide.

The Settlement and What It Means for Players

The dispute between Epic and Google dates back to 2020, when Fortnite was effectively removed from Google's platforms amid a legal fight over app store payment policies. After signaling a potential resolution late in 2025, the two companies have now made it official.

In a statement published on Epic's official site, the company confirmed it will “be investing robustly in serving developers and gamers with the Epic Games Store for Android, and will also be bringing Fortnite back to the Google Play Store worldwide.”

Epic founder Tim Sweeney took to social media to mark the occasion, stating that Fortnite will be back on Google Play Store "soon" and adding that "installation on Android will become much easier later in 2026."

Google's Third-Party Billing Rollout

A central point of the original lawsuit was Google's policy requiring all in-app purchases to route through Google Play Billing, cutting out alternative payment options. As part of the resolution, Google has committed to allowing third-party billing on its platforms. The rollout will happen in phases across different regions:

This phased approach means players and developers in different regions will gain access to alternative billing options at different times, with full global coverage not arriving until late 2027.

A Long Road Back to Android

The feud between Epic and Google (and a parallel battle with Apple) began in 2020 when Epic deliberately bypassed platform payment systems in Fortnite, triggering removal from both the App Store and Google Play. While the Apple situation has had its own separate legal trajectory, the Google dispute has now been resolved.

During the years Fortnite spent off Google Play, players could still access the game on Android by sideloading it through the Epic Games website, though that process was considerably less straightforward than a standard app store download. Sweeney's comment about installation becoming "much easier later in 2026" suggests Epic is actively working to smooth out that experience alongside the Google Play return.

Here's the thing: this settlement is a meaningful win not just for Fortnite players, but for Android developers broadly. If Google follows through on its third-party billing commitments, it could shift how app monetization works across the entire Android ecosystem.

Epic has also signaled broader ambitions on mobile, confirming that the Epic Games Store for Android will continue operating alongside Windows and Mac versions, positioning the company as a genuine multi-platform storefront.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When will Fortnite be back on Google Play Store?

Epic founder Tim Sweeney confirmed the return is coming "soon," but no specific launch date has been announced. He also noted that Android installation will become easier later in 2026.

Why was Fortnite removed from Google Play in the first place?

Epic deliberately bypassed Google Play's payment system in Fortnite back in 2020, violating platform policies. Google removed the game, and a legal battle followed that lasted until the 2025 settlement was finalized.

Can Android players still access Fortnite right now?

Yes. Fortnite has remained available on Android through sideloading via the Epic Games website, though the process requires more steps than a standard app store download.

Will Google allow third-party payments for all developers?

Google has committed to rolling out third-party billing support as part of the settlement, but the timeline varies by region, with full global coverage not expected until September 30, 2027.
