The Langrisser series has been running for 35 years. That is a long time to keep a tactical RPG franchise alive, and BlackJack Studio is betting that the next chapter is worth the wait. The studio officially revealed Sword of the Sea, titled Langrisser: Sea of Sword, with a debut teaser trailer this week, and pre-registration is open right now across iOS, Android, Steam, and PC.

A franchise going darker after three decades
Here's the thing about Langrisser as a series: it has always leaned into bright, heroic fantasy. Squad-based tactical battles, branching story paths, anime character art. The formula has worked for a long time. But Sea of Sword is deliberately pulling away from that tone.
The teaser opens on a beach scattered with discarded weapons and armor, the kind of imagery that suggests a battle already lost rather than one about to begin. Sun-drenched city streets and castle walls appear briefly before giving way to decaying underwater ruins. The story follows a nameless protagonist trying to recover lost memories while traveling alongside a mysterious white-haired girl across a continent wrapped in the Sea of Mists. Faction conflict, power struggles, and the fate of entire nations are all on the table.
This is a meaningful shift. Langrisser Mobile, the series' most recent release from 2018 that BlackJack Studio still actively supports, kept things relatively familiar. Sea of Sword is clearly aiming for something with more weight behind it.
The composer behind Octopath Traveler is scoring it
The creative team is worth paying attention to. Yasunori Nishiki, best known as the lead composer of the Octopath Traveler series, is handling the soundtrack. He earned a Best Music nomination at The Game Awards for that work and has contributed arrangements to Final Fantasy VII Remake, Kingdom Hearts III, and Granblue Fantasy Versus. His orchestral style fits the darker, more cinematic direction Sea of Sword is going for.
BlackJack Studio confirmed that the hand-painted anime art style the series is known for remains intact. The character designs visible at the end of the trailer are consistent with what longtime fans expect, just more detailed and clearly benefiting from the years of graphical improvement since Langrisser Mobile launched.
What's confirmed and what's still coming
BlackJack Studio has confirmed a simultaneous worldwide release across mobile and PC platforms, but no specific release date has been announced. The first full gameplay video is described as being in the final stages of preparation, with a public release expected soon.
Pre-registration is live on the official website now for players who want early access to news and updates as they come.
The key here is that this announcement is very much a first look. The trailer is atmospheric rather than mechanical, so the actual tactical systems and how they build on Langrisser's traditional squad-based combat are still unknown. That gameplay reveal will be the real test of whether the series is making a genuine next-generation leap or just a visual one.
