Like a Dragon 20th Anniversary Interview

The Like a Dragon series, internationally known as Yakuza, marks its 20th anniversary, commemorating the original game’s launch on PlayStation 2 in 2005. The franchise has earned a global following thanks to its character-driven stories, engaging combat systems, and extensive side content. To reflect on this milestone, key figures from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio shared their experiences and insights on the series’ history, its development philosophy, and the upcoming release of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties on PlayStation 5.

Executive Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama, Chief Director Ryosuke Horii, and Chief Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto spoke about how the series has grown from a niche Japanese title into a globally recognized franchise. Yokoyama described the anniversary as a “coming of age” for the series, highlighting ongoing celebrations such as exhibitions and special events designed to honor the franchise’s legacy and connect with fans over the next year.

The Evolution of RGG Studio and Its Development Approach

Over the past 20 years, RGG Studio has undergone significant changes. Yokoyama noted that the studio has grown more diverse, with international staff making up over 10% of the team and a nearly equal gender balance, compared to its original all-Japanese, predominantly male composition. This expanded perspective, combined with exposure to global culture through platforms like YouTube and Netflix, has naturally influenced the creative direction of the series.

Sakamoto emphasized that the studio’s consistent release schedule is a result of years of refining workflows and maintaining a careful balance between quality, scale, and efficiency. By streamlining development processes and focusing on core priorities, the team has been able to deliver frequent releases without compromising the series’ quality.

Integrating Real-World Settings into Gameplay

Like a Dragon titles are often set in the year of their release, which requires research to accurately portray urban landscapes such as Kamurocho. Sakamoto explained that mainline titles are grounded in contemporary environments, while spin-off projects allow for more creative freedom in their settings. This approach ensures that the series feels authentic while maintaining flexibility for innovation in side content.

The series’ minigames, a staple of its gameplay, are developed to complement the main story and setting. Horii described the process as starting with the story’s concept, then building side activities that reinforce narrative themes. Examples include the business management system in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, reflecting Ichiban Kasuga’s rise to prominence, and the resort-building minigame in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, inspired by its Hawaiian setting. The team prioritizes the series’ signature humor while iterating weekly to refine each experience.

Classic Arcade Games and Nostalgic Content

Arcade titles featured in Club Sega recreations are selected carefully. Horii explained that technical limitations, licensing concerns, and the feasibility of porting older games all influence which titles are included. The studio aims to choose games that the team respects and believes players will enjoy today, combining nostalgia with thoughtful design.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties: Reimagining a Classic

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties represents a comprehensive remake rather than a straightforward remaster. Yokoyama emphasized the studio’s mission to create games that feel current and enjoyable, with the remake serving as both a reflection of past achievements and a bridge to the series’ future. Horii explained that Kiwami 3 adds new cutscenes, additional characters, expanded voice acting, and major side content such as Life at Morning Glory and Legendary Baddie, Bad Boy Dragon. While retaining the original story, the game has been fully restructured, offering a fresh experience for returning players and a complete introduction for newcomers.

The game also includes story recap features to make it accessible for those new to the series. While prior titles can provide deeper context, Horii stressed that the game is designed to be enjoyable even for players jumping in for the first time.

Looking Forward While Honoring the Past

As the franchise reaches its 20-year milestone, the studio’s leadership emphasizes forward momentum. Horii noted that each game is approached with full commitment, as if it could be the last, ensuring that quality remains a central focus. Sakamoto highlighted the importance of evolving and embracing new challenges to expand the Like a Dragon IP. Yokoyama added that anniversary celebrations offered a rare chance to reflect on the series from a fan perspective, reinforcing the team’s appreciation for the franchise’s enduring appeal.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties launches on PlayStation 5 on February 12. Until then, several titles in the series are available on the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, allowing players to explore both the latest and earlier entries in the franchise.
