Marathon Players Are Actually Being Nice Thanks to C.A.R.R.I

New Marathon update takes a leaf out of ...

Extraction shooters are not known for their warmth. Marathon, Bungie's sci-fi take on the genre, has been particularly brutal since launch, with players calling it more aggressive than competitors like Arc Raiders. Then the mid-season update arrived, and suddenly strangers on Perimeter are forming alliances, extracting as a group, and praising each other's contract completions.

The feature behind this shift is called C.A.R.R.I, and it might be the most surprising addition Bungie has made to Marathon since the game went live.

What C.A.R.R.I actually does

The system hands out special commendations when players assist enemy runners with contracts, extract alongside rivals, and generally act like decent people in Tau Ceti. These commendations aren't just for show. Players can trade them for faction XP boosts and other rewards, including vault space upgrades through factions like Cyac.

The mid-season update also added the Stay Together feature, which allows solo players who cooperate during a match to group up and queue as a team for their next run. That's a significant structural shift for a game where solo runners have traditionally been easy prey the second they appear.

The mid-season update also delivered balance adjustments, nerfs to claymore drones and thermal scopes, and a new experimental mode that forces players into free sponsored kits instead of their custom loadouts.

The Reddit reaction, in players' own words

The community response has been genuinely positive for a significant portion of the playerbase. On the Marathon subreddit, user GringoinCDMX recounted coordinating with other solo runners on Perimeter, finishing objectives as a team, then extracting together before queuing up for another match. Their take: "the most fun I've had in the last week playing."

For players who never fully embraced the kill-on-sight approach, C.A.R.R.I feels like the game finally aligning with how they wanted to play all along. User MaddyCafe said it directly: "As somebody who has not put hours into the game to bleed it dry of all content within the first month, I like this update because it's specifically for people like me."

User Potential Owl shared a similar view, mentioning they were already assisting other players with contracts before the update dropped. "Now this is just the cherry on top," they wrote, adding that they're using commendations on Cyac faction rep to unlock max vault space.

Not everyone is playing nice

Here's the reality: a friendliness system only functions if everyone participates. And in Marathon, they absolutely have not.

User Surrealmirror played for a few hours after the update and found that "nobody was any nicer." That matches the map-specific experiences players are reporting. Friendlier interactions seem most common on Outpost and Perimeter, while Dire Marsh is still running on pure shoot-on-sight logic.

Even worse, some players are exploiting the cooperative environment. One Reddit user described being cornered by a team as a Rook, being told the group wanted to give them something, then receiving what they called "the Gift of Silence" the instant they emerged. The user wasn't upset, but the trend is obvious: C.A.R.R.I has handed bad actors a new social manipulation method.

The core issue is that the system incentivizes cooperation but cannot enforce sincerity. Bungie has created a reward structure, not a behavior guarantee.

Where Marathon goes from here

The mid-season update arrives at a notable time for Marathon. The game launched on a budget exceeding $200 million, and while player counts have declined, Bungie has confirmed the game is not at risk of shutdown. Updates like C.A.R.R.I indicate the studio is actively testing what kind of experience Marathon should become over time.

If you left after launch, the combination of C.A.R.R.I, Stay Together, and the new sponsored kit queue experiment offers a few legitimate reasons to return.
