Bungie has dropped a new patch for Marathon that does something most extraction shooters haven't tried: it ties your ranked eligibility directly to how much gear you're willing to risk.

The ranked queue isn't live just yet, but the patch has planted a countdown in-game and revealed exactly how the system works. Spoiler: it's more involved than a simple win/loss ladder.

The Buy-In That Makes Every Run Count

To even queue into ranked, you need to meet a minimum loadout value threshold. That's not just a formality. It means you have to show up with real gear on the line, which immediately separates ranked from casual play in a meaningful way.

Once you're in, progression runs from Bronze all the way up to Pinnacle, with each tier split into three subdivisions. Climbing requires successfully extracting with a set amount of loot value earned during the run, not counting whatever you brought in. The higher the rank, the bigger the extraction target.

Here's the thing: failing to hit that target before exfil means zero progress. Failing to extract at all means you lose progress. Both outcomes sting in different ways, which is exactly the kind of pressure that makes ranked extraction feel different from a standard match.

Holotags Are the Wild Card

Every ranked player carries a holotag, a special item that contributes to your target loot score. These come in different rarities, with rarer tags adding larger sums toward your extraction goal.

The catch? Every other player in the lobby is carrying one too. Killing a runner and grabbing their holotag is a direct shortcut to hitting your target. It turns PvP from an optional detour into a genuine strategic decision: do you grind for loot, or hunt other players?

This creates a tension that feels true to what Marathon is actually about. Looting and shooting aren't separate activities here, they're both paths to the same goal.

Cosmetics, Seasons, and What's Still Unknown

Reaching tier milestones unlocks exclusive cosmetics, and the key detail Bungie confirmed is that these rewards are tied to the first time you hit a milestone. Drop from Pinnacle back to Diamond? You keep the Pinnacle cosmetic. Some rewards drop immediately, others are distributed at the end of a Marathon season.

There are still gaps in the picture. Which maps will rotate through ranked play, whether the Perimeter or the newly added Cryo Archive, hasn't been confirmed. It's also unclear whether squads of three are mandatory or if solo and duo play will be supported, though the in-game guide references crews harvesting loot value together. Players also need to be account level 25 and have met all factions before the queue unlocks.

What's clear is that the loadout buy-in mechanic doubles as a vault cleaner. If you've been hoarding gear and never spending it, ranked is about to give you a very compelling reason to change that habit.

Going Live Saturday

Ranked drops at 5PM GMT this Saturday according to the in-game clock. That gives runners a short window to stock up on gear before the day-one rush hits.

For players who want to get a feel for coordinated play before committing to ranked, the experimental duos mode is also available right now as a lower-stakes warmup. Keep an eye on the official Marathon site for any further updates before the mode goes live. Make sure to check out more:
