Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gets Free Switch 2 Upgrade With 8-Player Local Play

Nintendo just dropped a free update for a nine-year-old game, and it's a bigger deal than most people expected. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe received update 4.0.0 today, September 2, 2026, adding a suite of Switch 2-specific enhancements that genuinely change how the game plays, not just how it looks.

The update caught a lot of people off guard. With Mario Kart World already out on Switch 2, the assumption was that Nintendo had moved on. Turns out, they hadn't.

What update 4.0.0 actually adds

Here's the thing: this isn't a minor patch. The changes are substantial enough that Switch 2 owners have real reasons to boot up a game they may have shelved.

  • Eight-player local multiplayer on a single Switch 2 console, up from the previous four-player split-screen cap. You'll need enough Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controllers to go around, but the option is now there.
  • CameraPlay support, letting a connected USB-C camera display players' faces on-screen during local multiplayer and online matches via GameChat. It works with 2-4 players in either mode.
  • Enhanced visuals on the Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, with noticeably shorter loading times before races and battle modes.
  • 96 Races mode for Booster Course Pass owners, letting you chain all 96 tracks from the base game and DLC into a single continuous VS playlist.
  • A base speed adjustment for racers, bumped up by the equivalent of one coin bonus. The Boo item also no longer slows you down when driving off-track.
tip
CameraPlay requires a compatible USB-C camera (sold separately). The 96 Races mode is exclusive to players who own the Booster Course Pass.

The eight-player situation changes party gaming

The jump from four to eight local players is the headliner. Four-player split-screen has been the standard for home console Mario Kart since the N64 days, so doubling that capacity on a single console is a meaningful shift for anyone who actually hosts game nights.

Split at eight ways, each player gets a small slice of screen real estate, so a large TV helps. But the option existing at all is the point. Nintendo is positioning Switch 2 as a genuine social gaming hub, and this update feeds directly into that.

Why Nintendo updated this instead of just moving on

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe originally launched on Nintendo Switch in 2017 and has never really stopped selling. It's the best-selling Switch game of all time, which gives Nintendo a clear incentive to keep it relevant on the new hardware rather than let it sit as a backward-compatible title with no enhancements.

The timing is also worth noting. This update landed one day after the Switch 2 price increased to $599.99. Dropping a free, meaningful upgrade for one of the most popular games in the library the very next day is a smart way to remind people what they're getting with the hardware.

Nintendo has been rolling out a mix of free and paid Switch 2 upgrades for its first-party catalog. Pikmin 3 Deluxe received a resolution boost and GameShare support in Bingo Battle just a day earlier. The pattern suggests Nintendo is working through its back catalog methodically, though some major titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Luigi's Mansion 3 are still waiting.

What this means for the 96-track marathon

The 96 Races mode is niche but genuinely appealing for completionists. The Booster Course Pass added 48 tracks across six waves, and being able to race all 96 in one unbroken run gives the DLC a new sense of finality. It's the kind of feature that sounds simple but clearly required deliberate design work to implement.

For players who bought the Booster Course Pass and then moved on, this is a reason to come back. For players who never finished all the DLC tracks, a marathon playlist adds structure to what was previously just a large menu.

You'll find tips and strategies for navigating the full track roster in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe guide collection, which covers everything from item usage to optimal racing lines across the expanded cup lineup.

The bigger picture for Switch 2 owners

Nintendo's approach to Switch 2 upgrades is shaping up to be one of the more player-friendly hardware transitions in recent memory. Free updates that add real functionality, not just resolution bumps, make a strong case for upgrading even if you already own a large Switch library.

The question now is which first-party titles get similar treatment next. If a nine-year-old racing game can get eight-player local support and a full 96-track mode, the ceiling for what Nintendo might do with other catalog titles is genuinely interesting. Keep an eye on the broader gaming guides hub as more Switch 2 update coverage rolls in.
