Nintendo pushed out Mario Kart World version 1.7.0 today, and the headliner is straightforward: two new Routes are now live in Knockout Tour. Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally join the rotation, giving players who have already run at least one rally in that mode a fresh set of paths to race through.
What the two new routes actually add
Knockout Tour has been one of Mario Kart World's most talked-about modes since launch, and Nintendo has been quietly expanding it with each update. The two additions this time are not just cosmetic shuffles of existing tracks. Drill Rally and Boomerang Rally are distinct named routes, and they unlock in your selection pool once you have played any rally in Knockout Tour before. The key here is that this is gated by prior play, so if you have not touched Knockout Tour yet, you will want to do that first.
Photo mode gets a meaningful upgrade too. Players can now layer stickers onto their in-game screenshots directly from the pause menu, with touch and mouse controls both supported. It is a small addition on paper, but photo mode enthusiasts have been asking for more tools since the game launched.
Balance changes that will actually affect your races
Beyond new content, the patch carries a set of balance adjustments that are worth paying attention to.
- Acceleration has been raised for characters and vehicles that previously sat at the low end of that stat, which should shake up vehicle meta picks at the competitive level.
- Gliding speed has been increased for high-speed characters and a handful of other vehicles, making aerial segments feel less punishing for speed-focused builds.
- Players can now hop immediately after being hit by Kamek's magic or Bullet Bill, which removes a frustrating window of lost control that had been a complaint since day one.
- Slipstream cancelling is now possible by braking before the slipstream fully activates, giving experienced players a new tool to manage positioning.
- Landing on rivals now grants a longer dash window, making that interaction more rewarding.
- Item box drop rates have been adjusted in both standard races and Knockout Tour.
- Rivals holding a Super Horn are now visible to other players, which is genuinely useful information during tight races.
- A ramp has been added to the segment running from Airship Fortress to Bowser's Castle.
Bug fixes: a long list with some notable entries
The fix list in 1.7.0 is one of the longer ones the game has seen. Several course-specific issues that caused players to fall off tracks or clip through geometry have been addressed across Dandelion Depths, Bowser's Castle, Salty Salty Speedway, Koopa Troopa Beach, Cheep Cheep Falls, Wario Shipyard, DK Pass, Shy Guy Bazaar, and Dry Bones Burnout.
A Time Trials bug that was returning incorrect finish times has also been fixed, though Nintendo has flagged that ghost data affected by this issue may be removed from rankings without prior notice.
The Bullet Bill fixes are listed as plural without specifics, which suggests more than one edge case was addressed. The Bob-omb throw distance inconsistency on the Standard Bike and W-Twin Chopper has been corrected, and the Spiny Shell breaking gold blocks and broadcast vans is no longer an issue.
Nintendo's steady drip of free content
Nintendo has not announced any paid DLC roadmap for Mario Kart World, but the cadence of free updates tells its own story. The game launched with a strong base, and each patch has added something tangible rather than just fixing bugs. Mario Kart 8 eventually doubled its content through paid expansions, and the player base for World is watching closely for any similar signal.
For now, 1.7.0 is available to download on Nintendo Switch 2. If you are planning to run the new Knockout Tour routes or want to break down the balance changes in detail, the Mario Kart World guides collection has everything you need to get up to speed.
