Picture this: Jack Black and Jason Momoa somewhere on a film set in New Zealand, giving fans a casual update on a sequel that already has the internet losing its mind. That's exactly what Minecraft Live delivered this week, and it came with a title reveal, a first look at a new character, and what might be the most exciting casting tease the franchise has pulled off yet.
Minecraft fans finally have an official name for the sequel: A Minecraft Movie Squared. The title was announced during Minecraft Live by content creators TommyInnit and Quackity, putting an end to the placeholder names that had been floating around since the first film's release.
The title drop and what came with it
The Minecraft Live segment packed in more than just a name reveal. Alongside Black and Momoa's on-set appearance, fans got their first proper look at Kirsten Dunst as Alex, complete with the character's signature red hair in a side plait. The green t-shirt is notably absent, which is a small but deliberate creative choice worth watching.
Dunst's casting was confirmed earlier this year after she publicly said she'd be happy to sign up for a Minecraft film. Seeing her in character, even briefly, confirms production is well underway in New Zealand.
The release date is locked in too: A Minecraft Movie Squared hits cinemas on July 23, 2027.
The Matt Berry mystery and why fans are convinced it's Herobrine
Here's the thing: the most talked-about moment from the entire reveal has nothing to do with the title or Alex. It's a few seconds of Matt Berry being deliberately cagey about his role.
Berry, who voiced the Nitwit Villager in the first film, appears in the Minecraft Live footage and says he's been told he cannot reveal who he's playing. A crew member then holds up one of Steve's blue vests. Berry's response?
