Mirage 7 Marks a Shift for Drakkar Dev

Italian developer Drakkar Dev has released Mirage 7, a departure from the studio’s decade-long focus on mecha action games like War Tech Fighters and Blackwind. Unlike previous titles that relied on giant robots and rocket-fueled combat, Mirage 7 centers on Nadira, a human protagonist navigating a harsh desert on foot. This change emphasizes exploration, survival, and story-driven gameplay, marking a clear shift in the studio’s design philosophy.

Co-founder Manlio Greco describes the game as the realization of a dark fairytale novel he wrote ten years ago. The narrative blends Arabian Nights-inspired aesthetics with a subtle sci-fi thread, creating a world where every player action advances the story. Greco emphasizes that while survival mechanics are present, they primarily serve the narrative, rather than defining the gameplay itself.

Survival and Exploration in a Harsh Desert

The story begins with an ominous opening: a drone is destroyed over a military base, awakening a gaunt, hybrid creature. From this scene, the game transitions to Nadira’s quest to save her sister, set in a magical but unforgiving desert environment. Players must manage basic survival tasks such as locating water, finding canteens, and starting fires, all while avoiding desert threats like giant sand insects. Despite these survival elements, Mirage 7 is primarily an adventure game, using its mechanics to support the broader story rather than simulate survival alone.

A key component of exploration is Nadira’s companion, Jiji, a lizard who assists with navigating narrow passages, detecting water sources, and defending against predators at night. Jiji’s expanded role in the game stems from the original novel, where the creature was a minor presence. Greco notes that Jiji became an essential storytelling tool, allowing the game to reveal Nadira’s thoughts naturally through interaction.

Influences and World Design

Greco cites his Sicilian heritage as a major influence on the game’s world design. Sicily’s layered history of invasions—from Arabs to Vikings—provides a foundation for the game’s architectural and cultural motifs. The fictional setting also draws inspiration from regions like southern Spain, particularly Seville, blending Arabic and other historical influences to create a distinctive, hybrid environment. These design choices give the desert world of Mirage 7 a unique visual identity and reinforce the narrative’s Arabian Nights-inspired tone.

Nadira herself carries a slingshot and a musical instrument. Originally a sitar in the novel, the instrument was redesigned as a lute to fit the game’s mechanics, preserving its story significance while allowing smoother movement and combat. These tools position Nadira as an ordinary but resourceful character, in contrast with the mechanized protagonists of Drakkar Dev’s earlier titles.

Challenges in Game Design

Transitioning from robot-centric gameplay to a human protagonist posed design challenges for the studio. One notable example is the temple level, which the team regards as the highlight of the game. Developers experimented with “cardboard-boxing,” creating scale models of levels to explore puzzle layouts and player movement before adding digital art. This method complemented traditional gray-boxing and allowed the team to develop gameplay sequences that felt dynamic without disrupting the story.

Greco also considered including a genie inspired by traditional Arabian Nights folklore. While the concept aligned with the game’s darker narrative moments, it was ultimately omitted to maintain focus and balance, though elements of suspense and tension remain throughout the adventure.
