If you pulled the original Blade expecting a debuffer, you were playing the wrong version. HoYoverse has now officially confirmed that Mortenax Blade, a brand-new alternate version of the character, is coming to Honkai: Star Rail in the 4.3 update, and the differences from his base form are significant.
A completely different Blade
The original Blade is a Destruction path character built around soaking damage and converting it into AOE attacks. His whole identity is the blood knight fantasy: get hit, build stacks, explode. Mortenax Blade throws that out entirely.
This version follows the Nihility path, which means his kit will center on debuffing enemies and applying damage-over-time effects. Think Kafka energy rather than berserker energy. He also deals Fire damage instead of Wind, making him a genuinely different unit despite sharing the same name and lore origin.

Mortenax Blade is a five-star unit, so you'll want to plan your Stellar Jade reserves accordingly. He won't share a banner with the original Blade.
Where Mortenax fits in the 4.0 alt pattern
HoYoverse has been rolling out alternate versions of fan-favorite characters throughout the 4.0 patch series. Most of these alts have been slotted into the new Elation path. Mortenax Blade is a notable exception, landing on Nihility instead.
Here's the thing: that distinction matters for team-building. Nihility characters typically support DOT-focused compositions, which opens up interesting synergy with units like Kafka, Black Swan, and Sampo. If you're already running a DOT team, Mortenax Blade could slot in as a strong debuffer anchor.

The road to 4.3 runs through 4.2
Before Mortenax Blade arrives, the 4.2 update is the next stop. That patch, launching April 22, 2026, brings LV 999 Silver Wolf, another Stellaron Hunter alt. She's an Elation unit and will share her banner window with a separate new Elation character.
The Special Program stream covering 4.2 details airs April 10, 2026, so players won't have to wait long for a fuller picture of what's coming before Mortenax Blade's patch.
For players managing their pull budget across multiple patches, the sequencing is clear: Silver Wolf alt in 4.2, Mortenax Blade in 4.3. Plan accordingly.
